New flight option from June From Geneva to Split by
EasyJet
In early summer, on 28 June to be precise, the first airplane of the leading
European low-cost airline EasyJet will take off from Geneva, connecting the
Swiss city with the City of Split in Dalmatia. Direct flights will be
available three times a week during the tourist season – Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Sundays.
This is the second flight option for Split introduced by the airline as
EasyJet airplanes have flown between Split Airport and London during the
summer tourist season since 2009, and between London & Bristol and Rijeka.
When the first EasyJet’s airplane landed on Split Airport in early May of
2006, it marked the beginning of the penetration of the Croatian market by
Europe’s largest low-cost airline. Split has thus become the first city in
Croatia having its airport included in a network consisting of 76
international airports where EasyJet’s airplanes land, and the new
Geneva-Split flight option will successfully continue the era of
increasingly cheap flights to Croatian destinations.
The announced prices will be available from 39.35 CHF, which will certainly
contribute to an increase in the number of arrivals and overnights for
tourists from the French part of Switzerland in Split-Damatia County.
According to Croatian National Tourist Board’s Representative Office in
Switzerland, most of the tour operators plan to extend their programs to
include wellness and city break programs in Croatia.

European destinations within reach
Affordable flights from Pula to London, Dublin and Cologne
After successful cooperation last year, Pula Airport has reached a new
agreement with the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair – as of spring this year,
affordable flights from Pula to London, and later to Dublin, will once again
be available. Another agreement has been reached with the German low-cost
airline Germanwings – as of May, flights from Pula to Cologne will be
available, and perhaps to Stuttgart later on.
In addition to the agreements reached for the said destinations, Pula
Airport is still negotiating with Scandinavian countries, Slovakia and Czech
Republic, and they also plan to offer flights to certain Spanish cities and
Belgrade.
The director of Pula Airport pointed out that one of the objectives of the
flights is to provide passengers with point to point flight options instead
having to fly cheap via Italy.
All these projects require improvements of the Airport’s technical status
and efforts to improve the infrastructure. They also plan to raise the level
of passenger comfort with maximum government aid, and make numerous
reconstructions on the runway, the platform and the airport building. The
airport management believes the passenger safety and traveling quality are
very important, and that the airport will be much more competitive on the
market after the said works.
In 2007, over 385 000 passengers traveled via Pula Airport, which is 30
percent more as compared to 2006. In 2008, they expect ten percent more
passengers than in 2007.
After Ryanair’s flights to London start on 1 April, and to Dublin soon
afterwards, flights to Cologne will be offered as of 1 May. The Cologne
flight season will last seven months, with flights available twice a week,
Thursdays and Sundays. Exceptionally affordable tickets for these flights
are already available for online booking.

Međimurje - Tradition Road for entertainment and
education
Guided by the idea to offer something new to guests and tourists in
Međimurje County, the Hands of Međimurje association has recently presented
its Tradition Roads project aiming to combine tradition with a part of
Međimurje region’s tourist offer.
The Tradition Road is like a wine road, designed to be a tourist product
offered to travel agencies and organized tourist groups visiting Međimurje.
The Hands of Međimurje association plans to combine the region’s old trades
with the restaurant & hotel offer. The project is supported by the Međimurje
County Tourist Board and the Čakovec Tourist Board.
The present tourist points on the Tradition Road are Međimurski dvori, Mala
hiža, Stridon, Hotel Golf and other hospitality establishments, and the
offer also includes the Hands of Međimurje Gallery & Educational Center,
pottery, gardening in a traditional garden, weaving in a loom, wood carving,
traditional cuisine, basket-making and a river mill operated by the EOL
Environmental Organization.
Guests visit the present wine road in Međimurje, which has existed for over
10 years, by buses or cars, and they only have time to visit a few
winemakers during their stay. The wine boutique industry of Međimurje is
prepared to receive up to twenty buses a day at different locations. The
Tradition Road is a much more interesting tourist product, containing a more
comprehensive offer.
It significantly differs from the wine road because it includes the
educational component providing the guests with a better insight to the
tradition of the Međimurje region. In addition to sightseeing, the guests
can take part in the work of the said craftsmen and personally make a
souvenir or another item, subject to prior notice by telephone.

Oprisavci - Brod-Posavina County
Animals as keepers of traditions and landscape
The Municipality of Oprisavci in Brod-Posavina County is well known for its
Lipizzaner horses, Croatian shepherds and the Gajna landscape. The County
has recently presented its guide through its protected areas including the
east part of the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, forest vegetation reserves
Prašnik and Muški bunar, Ornithological Reserves Jelas ribnjaci and Bara
dvorina, and the protected landscapes Jelas polje and Gajna.
The Brod Environmental Association (BEA) has implemented a 100,000 euro
CARDS nature protection project for protection, preservations and
improvement of biodiversity and development of environmental awareness with
respect to the breeding of autochthonous Croatian breeds and stimulation of
eco-production. The local population will also benefit from the project as
it involves eco-breeding of cattle and pigs.
20 Podolian cattle have recently been brought back to the pastures of Gajna,
and their return should preserve the visual aspect of the landscape, as a
lack of grazing cattle results in more and more bushes and trees impairing
the former appearance of the pastures.
Brod-Posavina County is abundant in natural resources, which is confirmed by
over 300- year-old trees in the forest vegetation reserve Prašnik, as well
as the little known fact that the fishponds of Jelas are unique for the
cranes landing there during their migration to the faraway regions of North
Africa.
In addition to being natural protectors of vegetation, the Podolian cattle,
the Croatian Posavac hound and the black Slavonian pig will contribute to
improvement of the tourist offer in the Municipality of Oprisavci. The Gajne
project will be supplemented with the construction of long forgotten mills
on Sava River, and the so-called Hoof Road, a route along Sava where horses
used to pull boats upstream, will be revived in cooperation with the tourist
board.

wine road, for the decoration of the County’ center – the Town of Čakovec
and the most beautifully decorated balcony, while Sv. Martin on Mura
received a European Destination of Excellence award.
Over the past year, intensive work has been done on promotion of Međimurje
County, numerous new projects have been launched, new tourist products
received grants and incentives, the increasingly visited website of the
Međimurje County Tourist Board (updated on a daily basis) has been

useful information on gastronomy, sports, cultural events, tradition, and
everything Međimurje County has to offer.
The map is intended to help each tourist in the county find their way around
and select and reach interesting features. It will be available in tourist
offices, bars and gift shops.

PRESENTING
Lika-Senj County
Four regions for different pleasures
Most of Lika-Senj County is situated in mountainous Croatia, and a smaller
part of it belongs to the Croatian littoral. The mountains and the sea are
deeply embedded in it – 150 kilometers of Velebit, the most beautiful and
the biggest Croatian mountain, intertwines with the cleanest part of the
Adriatic Sea including the Island of Pag, one of the most indented islands
in Croatia.
Lika-Senj County ranks very high among Croatian counties in the number and
diversity of protected natural objects and sites – it accounts for 58
percent of the total surface area of all national parks and nature parks in
Croatia. The highlights among them include Plitvice Lakes, Paklenica and
North Velebit National Parks, and the Velebit Nature Park & Global Biosphere
Reserve.
The county is divided in four different and equally interesting regions:
Lika, Gacka, Podgorje and the northern part of the Island of Pag.
Numerous climatic and relief diversities and a rich cultural, historical and
sacral heritage make Lika-Senj County a very distinctive area.
The natural beauties of the national parks, mills on Gacka River, Grabovača
cave park near Gospić and the Velebit Botanical Garden on Zavižan are merely
a part of the impressive offer of the county, providing its visitors with
various options including rural and seaside tourism, exploring & adventure
tourism, health tourism, meditative holidays, active holidays with sports &
recreation, winter holidays, hunting and fishing on lakes and rivers, and
many other forms of entertainment and holidays. In addition to quality
hotels and other accommodation facilities in the Plitvice Lakes National
Park, the entire county has good accommodation options including hotel and
private accommodation, and a diverse gastro offer.
The county offers numerous events all year long, the most significant being
the Autumn in Lika, held every year in Gospić in early October; the eco-show
presenting autochthonous products of the county; the Senj Summer Carnival;
the Pag Sheep and Pag Cheese Exhibition in Novalja on the Island of Pag,
known for its lace-making tradition, cheese and Zrče - one of the most
beautiful beaches in the Adriatic; the Plitvice Marathon running through the
National Park in late May; and the Eco & Ethno Gacka event.
The highlights among the cultural & historical landmarks are the Nikola
Tesla Memorial Center in Smiljan, the birthplace of this great inventor and
physicist (Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan in 1856 and in New York in
1943), and the Nehaj Fort from the 16th century, a symbol of the town of
Senj.

Brtonigla, Istria
History, nature and wine
The Istrian town of Brtonigla, erected on a picturesque hill and situated in
the municipality bearing the same name, is a small town of great discoveries,
known for its diligent winegrowers and olive growers, as well as its
membership in the Italian association 'Cittŕ del vino'.
In addition to the standard tourist offer, you can enjoy public festivals in
Brtonigla, take tours of carstic caves, visit typical rural settlements with
stone houses, hunt, or enjoy mushroom and asparagus picking.
The European Council’s Local Democracy Academy has its seat in Brtonigla,
and the International Summer School of Painting Hortus Niger (Black Garden),
named after the former Roman name of the town, is held here in summertime.
The town of Brtonigla was first mentioned in 1234. It was erected in the
place of what was once a fort and later a castle. After being conquered by
the Romans, the forts were transformed into towns, and then into feudal
courts. The entire area is abundant in remains of pre-historical settlements
from the Bronze Age, which have been pronounced cultural monuments.
The natural beauties of the Brtonigla region include the Škarline Nature
Park, Mramornica Cave, and Srbani Cave.
The Brtonigla region is ideal for hunting tourism enthusiasts. Numerous
trails provide opportunities for bike riding, horseback riding or long walks.
The Istrian Malvasia biking trail, the Oliva Nordic walking trail and the
hiking & mountaineering trails are just some of the recreation options
offered in the region, including a perfect paragliding spot in Mirna River
Valley.
One of the biggest public festivals in Istria – the Festival of St. Rok – is
held every year on 16 August, at which time several thousand people visit
Brtonigla to see various cultural and sporting events and enjoy the
gastronomic specialties and renowned wines.
The area is sometimes referred to as the Land of Wine – the Festival of
Istrian Malvasia is held in Brtonigla every year.

INVESTMENTS
Ilok region
Wine in the service of tourism
The town of Ilok is situated on western slopes of Fruška gora, along the
right bank of Danube in Vukovar Srijem County, and is the easternmost point
of the Republic of Croatia. The attractive landscape of the Ilok region is
well known for winegrowing and quality wines, natural beauties and a myriad
of very valuable cultural & historical monuments, the highlights among them
being the gothic churches as a borderline between the Western art and the
East, and relics of Islamic architecture.
The Ilok Tourist Board has entered the year 2008 with many plans and
projects intended to turn the development of winemaking into a tourist
attraction of this very distinctive area.
Planting new vineyards on a regular basis, they expect to have 1500 hectares
of plantations by 2009. The capacities of Ilok’s wine cellars have reached 8
million liters, while Agro-Ilok is completing its modern wine cellar
including a new bottling plant for an additional 1.5 million liters.
The Croatian Government and the World Bank have invested 70 million HRK in
the revitalization of the old town core, including the renovation of the old
wine cellar for hospitality purposes and the restaurant and bungalows within
Hotel Dvorac.
The former Brnaković Manor will soon be provided with new amenities – the
ground floor and basement of the new facility built in its original form
will contain a wine boutique and a Tourist Board’s info center. The old
summer residence of Principovac is also under reconstruction including five
premium suites, a restaurant, a popular belvedere, a golf course, tennis
courts, promenades, and a trim track.
A part of the famous winegrowing region of Pajzoš, known as a former Tito’s
residence, is also expecting renovation. The novelties also include a villa
for hospitality purposes and around fifty hectares of vineyards and a wine
cellar.

Medveja Beach
Soon to become the best-equipped beach in the Adriatic
Medveja is a small fishermen’s town on Opatija Riviera, situated at the foot
of Učka Mountain not far from Lovran and Opatija and popular for its
magnificent bay with one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia – the
Medveja Beach. The Opatija-based company Hemingway Bar has been granted a
10-year concession for this natural gravelly beach, which should be
transformed into the best-equipped beach in the Adriatic.
The Hemingway Bar Company has two Hemingway Bars in Zagreb and Rijeka and
one (including a restaurant) on Opatija Riviera, and it has recently been
granted a concession for one of the most distinctive symbols of the Opatija
region – the Medveja Beach. The concession covers around 50 thousand square
meters, the sea part accounting for 31 000, and the land part accounting for
the rest.
The onshore concession includes two catering facilities – a bar with a
terrace and a pizzeria with a terrace.
The Medveja Beach will be renovated and divided into several parts as early
as this summer. One section will be intended for swimming and open to
everyone, like the remaining sections. A section will be provided for
children, and a part of the beach will offer onshore and offshore sporting
options. In addition, a part of the area will offer luxurious accommodation
options – small houses with baldachins, big screen TVs and special service.
Food from the restaurant will be delivered across the beach, and what is
certainly interesting is the Internet access and laptops available on the
beach, a first in Croatia.
In addition, the beach will offer massage and beauty treatments, morning
aerobics and after-beach parties.
The beach will employ around a hundred people, and the works on all
facilities should be completed by the summer of 2009.

Zadar
The new Hotel Bastion expecting business guests
Hotel Bastion, another accommodation facility to be opened in the historical
core of Zadar’s Peninsula, will be primarily intended for business guests
and tourists wishing to enjoy cultural programs and events in Zadar.
Named after the historical bastion site where it was built, Hotel Bastion
will offer a 4-star service. A total of 28 accommodation units will be
available – 23 double bedrooms and five suites. In line with the target
client group, the hotel is equipped with a videoconference room and a small
wellness center in the basement for guests to relax in.
As the hotel was built in the city’s historical core, in the part of the
peninsula known as Muraj, the architects who worked on it ensured its design
is in accordance with the conservation rules, so the entire facility,
including the restaurant, is equipped with stylish furniture.
Zadar, the tourist and economic center of Zadar-Knin County, has a dozen
hotels, most of which are located in seaside areas. Few of them (including
Hotel Bastion as of this summer) are situated in the city, which makes them
ideal for tourists who want to be in the center of the action and enjoy
walks and sightseeing around the cultural heritage of Zadar.
As it happens, the centuries-long turbulent history, devastations and
creations have left both scars and numerous historical records comprising
the city’s valuable present monumental heritage. Numerous churches and
cultural monuments from all eras have been preserved, presenting all
architectural styles – from Roman architecture to the Middle Age and modern
design. Around 70 of them are situated in the historical core of the city,
while the remaining 600 immovable cultural monuments are spread around the
immediate and broader surrounding areas.

OFFERINGS
Gračac and the surrounding area
A vivid ethnological treasury
Although still quite unknown in terms of tourism, the town of Gračac and the
surrounding area in Lika’s Velebit Valley have a lot to offer to tourists.
Even though the area does not provide tourists with modern tourist
facilities and luxurious hotels, the region promotes eco tourism interwoven
with traditional elements, cultural heritage and original gastronomy, and
supplemented with attractive excursion programs including recreational and
adventurous arrangements.
The first phase of the local resource valuation project has been implemented
by designing excursion programs focusing on active holidays in nature, and
the offer also includes other options such as hunting and fishing.
Considering the heterogeneity of the area as a key resource, the tourist
employees are in for a complex task of connecting all of the said programs.
So far, they have made a full map of the area including the existing and
planned thematic trails connecting the natural attractions of the area. The
region has over a hundred different springs. In addition to the well-known
springs of Una, Zrmanja, Dabašnica and Krka, there are many other springs
situated in the intact nature of this carstic landscape in Lika. Signposts
for the most attractive rest stops are available both in the map and in the
field.
The great potentials of the area include different biking trails, hiking and
mountaineering routes, and horse and kayak tours, all of which are connected
with the local producers, so domestic refreshment like cheese and brandy are
available to tourists.
Tourists can also enjoy multi-day holidays in the region, accommodated in
increasingly numerous private apartments in Lika, and visit the nearby
Velebit Nature Park during their stay.

US IN THE WORLD
Osijek’s Hotel Waldinger
Internationally recognized quality in Osijek
Opened three years ago, Hotel Waldinger, located in the city of Osijek in
the very center of Slavonia, has recently been pronounced the best small
4-star hotel in the world. The flattering award was presented by the
international tourist organization Trade Leaders Club, whose members and
awarding committee are former winners of the award.
Berislav Mlinarević, the owner of Hotel Waldinger, has set new benchmarks in
Osijek’s hospitality offer with his hospitality company Romos for over 20
years, and this award is definitely a formal acknowledgement of his work.
The Trade Leaders Club is one of the most renowned tourist awards, which has
been presented for 30 years.
Hotel Waldinger is decorated in the secession style, and the interior
consists of a combination of traditional and modern equipment. The quality
of the rooms, a diverse offer and a high-level service were certainly among
the reasons for the award.
The large multipurpose hall on the first floor, seating 100 people, is
extensively equipped and suitable for banquets, seminars, receptions,
promotions and other formal occasions, and the small hall seating 20 people
is ideal for business meetings.
The hotel also contains a gym and a sauna.
It has 15 rooms, a suite, and a 3-star annex with 7 accommodation units
The hotel particularly focuses on food preparation, treatment and
combination of ingredients, decoration and serving, staff, and the overall
attitude toward the guests. The hotel produces it own food and pastries, and
a restaurant by the name of Klub Waldinger is available within the hotel.
The chef constantly introduces novelties in line with the gastro trends,
while a first-class sommelier from Argentina tends to 116 different wines.

Cres
The most innovative European camp in 2007
This year at the tourist fair in Stuttgart, Germany’s highest-circulation
camping guide ADAC Camping Caravanning introduced the winners of the awards
for 2008 within a gala dinner.
Camp Slatina on Cres won the new product innovation award for their dog
accommodation program.
ADAC presents the award to camps offering, in addition to the usual camp
offer, some special solutions, innovative programs, attractions or future
concepts, and the care provided to pets and their owners within the Cres
camp was recognized by ADAC as an important and innovative program.
Camp Slatina on the Island of Cres is the only camp in Croatia awarded in
this segment, and the reason why it won the award is the fact that it
successfully implemented and applied a new product last year – the ''Camping
Cum Cane'' project, also known as the ''Dogs Project – New Infrastructure
and Rules for Dog Owners''. The concept behind the innovative project
focuses on the harmony between the dog-owning guests and those without pets
by developing a dog-keeping program within camps. The program provides
maximum comfort for both dog owners, guests without pets, and dogs
themselves.
In addition to a special infrastructure, rules have been laid for dog owners,
enabling an undisturbed holiday in the camp for guests with or without dogs.
The rules provide both guests and dogs with a more pleasant stay and,
according to them, all dogs registered in the camp must wear camp id tags
and be leashed on roads, paths, the beach and camping plots; swimming with
dogs is only allowed in the zones provided for such purpose; separate places
are provided for dogs to relieve themselves; nighttime quiet from 10 p.m. to
7 a.m. applies to dogs as well, etc.
In addition to Cres’s Camp Slatina, the ADAC award was presented to camps in
The Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Austria.

USA Today and State Department
Croatia is in!
USA Today, America’s highest-circulation daily, has recently published the
latest travel trends detected among American travelers, and Croatia has
found its place among the trendy destinations. According to the authors of
the article who conducted the survey, great demand for Croatia is present on
the US market, and American tourists have already pronounced it the most
interesting destination, not only in the Mediterranean but in the whole of
Europe.
In addition to Croatia as the only European destination that was pronounced
a trend, the title went to Latin American countries like Panama, Mexico and
Argentina.
Other trends recognized by American tourists include eco hotels, their
programs, services and quality standards fully dedicated to environmental
protection, while the third trend pertains to the demand for cruise
arrangements, all of them in Europe.
The article in USA Today is a great acknowledgement of Croatia’s popularity,
although not the only one published in America these days. Namely, the
homepage of State Department’s website now includes the profile and identity
card of Croatia as the only country promoted this way at the official State
Department website.
In the recommendations to its citizens regularly published by the State
Department, Croatia is described as a safe and pleasant country that has
built motorways, has a clean sea, healthy food, and the citizens are
presented as extremely hospitable hosts.

The Regent Esplanade Zagreb Hotel
Back to the world’s elite
This year, The Regent Esplanade Zagreb Hotel was once again included in the
Golden List of the best 721 hotels, resorts and cruisers in the world,
created by readers of the prestigious travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler.
Readers of the esteemed travel magazine have traditionally elected the best
hotels, resorts and cruisers in the world that have exceeded their
expectations in provision of premium, highly personalized services. The
Regent Esplanade Zagreb Hotel won most of the votes for its superb
accommodation, food and beverage service, location and design, and it also
received very high ratings with respect to the excellence of its service.
This high award that once again placed the Zagreb hotel on the Golden List
of the best is yet another proof of its presence among the world’s hotel
elite. Not only that – the high ratings given by Condé Nast Traveler readers
additionally promote the City of Zagreb.
The Regent Esplanade Zagreb Hotel used to be known as Hotel Esplanade
Zagreb. The hotel was built back in 1925. Since that time, it has been one
of the most luxurious hotels in Zagreb.
One of the things that have undoubtedly influenced the decision to build the
luxurious hotel situated in the immediate vicinity of the Central Railway
Station was the famous Orient Express train that had stopped in Zagreb on
its route from Paris to Istanbul since 1883 – the rich clientele that could
afford such a trip was a reason why a premium hotel was opened in Zagreb.
This is confirmed by numerous awards and acknowledgements.
Condé Nast Traveler readers thus pronounced it one of the best hotels in the
world for the second consecutive year. According to their election published
in the late 2007, The Regent Esplanade Zagreb Hotel holds an excellent 34th
place on the list of 100 best and most luxurious hotels in Europe.
