Umag -
Large investments into camps
The company
Istraturist from Umag, the most northern Adriatic tourist centre, has
begun with investments into the further raising of quality of tourist
products and services. The announced investments are worth about 12, 5
million Euros, of which the majority will be invested into the raising of
the quality of camps.
Namely,
during the last five years Istraturist has invested about 76 million Euros
into the renovation of accommodation capacities and introduction of new
content. This year it is the turn of auto-camps, into whose improvement
will be invested about eight million Euros. In this way the largest
Istraturist camp Ladin gaj will become Camping park Umag with a four star
rating, while the camps Finida, Stella Maris, Pineta and Kanegra will have
three star standards.
All five
camps together have a capacity of 9000 places which makes up nearly half
the capacity of Istraturist.
Of the
announced eight million Euros, about five and a half million will be
invested into the Camping Park Umag in which, other than the overall
raising of quality of the camp offer, a large amount will also be invested
into landscaping the environment – the construction of a so called
fun-educational park Istria which will on about 13.000 square metres, in
the shape of map of Istria, present authentic Istrian sites and will be
witness to the thousand year coexistence with nature. Namely, guests will
be introduced to kažune (old Istrian stone houses), vineyards,
olive groves, orchards, they will see the red and grey Istrian soil….and
will be able to learn about the specific Mediterranean flora through
educational courses.
There will also be investments into the remaining four camps in which,
along with improving the conditions in the camp, special attention will
also be given to horticultural landscaping and in increasing animation and
children’s activities, because all camps of the Umag company operate under
the motto Family friendly camps and are adapted to offer ideal family
holidays.
As far as the technical part of the investment, it will also be necessary
to carry out parcelisation because of new installation for mobile homes,
installation of electricity, water, satellite and TV connections, raising
the standards of sanitary facilities, fixing up the beach and construction
of additional facilities like a belvedere and pirate ship.

Vukovar
- Opening of the
Hotel Lav
At the beginning of February in Vukovar, a
renowned city of Eastern Slavonia, the new, high category Hotel Lav was
opened. It is a facility which was constructed on the ruins of the old
Hotel Lav which was badly damaged during the war.
The Hotel Law has a four star rating and offers its guests a total of 42
rooms of which four are also luxuriously equipped apartments.
Along with this, the hotel also has a large a-la carte restaurant seating
90 people, a city café and business centre of sorts with four multipurpose
halls – one large hall with a capacity of 150 to 200 places, two medium
sized halls for about sixty people and one small hall with about 30
places, given that the halls may be joined into one large congress hall.
Other than all this, in the accommodation section of the hotel business
guests are offered a small business room, suitable for smaller business
meetings.
With this
hotel and congress centre the inhabitants of Vukovar hope that business
tourism will again come alive in the city.
The
location of the hotel is also very attractive as it is in the very centre
of Vukovar and the back of the hotel looks directly onto the Danube River
which for many Vukovar inhabitants is the “symbol of life”.
Other than
business guests and tourists, the hotel has also opened its doors to
potential incentives because the city truly has a powerful story which
through its tradition speaks of a thousand year history of the city and
region.
Also
celebrated at the opening of the newly renovated hotel was its 165th
anniversary. Namely, the hotel was constructed in 1840 and to date it has
been destroyed three times because of war events.

Planet -
Croatia
the most desirable
destination in the world
The renowned travel guide, Lonely Planet,
recently announced Croatia the most desirable destination in the world for
2005.
It has
already become traditional that every December all writers, journalists,
photographs and other associates of Lonely Planet who are active
throughout the whole world gather together to name be best destinations
for the upcoming year, and results of this survey are published at the
beginning of every year – so that tourists throughout the world will have
time to decide which country, according to their valued selection, to
chose for this years holiday.
After last years fourth place, Croatia has jumped to the very top of the
most desirable tourist countries and the reason for this is, as cited by
Lonely Planet, the unique combination of culture, history, gastronomy,
accessibility and affordable price.
One of the
surveyed journalists explained his nomination of Croatia using these
words: Croatia attracts a wide spectre of travellers with it rich variety
of attractions but at the same time it is not overcrowded with tourists.
It has developed an excellent tourist infrastructure, such that suits both
adventurers and those guests who require a certain level of comfort. This
is definitely Croatia’s year”.
As in
surveys to date the first five places according to popularity after
Croatia are occupied by China, Argentina, USA and Costa Rica and Italy
which share fifth place on the ladder of this year’s most popular
destinations.

New
York Times -
Croatia included in prestigious tourist
planner
That
Croatia has also become sought after and an increasingly present
destination on the American market is evidenced by the latest, traditional
January supplement of the prestigious New York Times which is printed in
1, 5 million copies.
Under the
heading “Where to travel in 2005” included are all the currently popular
world destinations which are divided into a number of basic categories in
the supplement.
In the
category of good-value trips in the company of China, Brazil, Argentina
and cities like Ljubljana, Sarajevo and Kiev appears Croatia– which
confirms the increase in popularity of the central and eastern European
region.
The
basic question which permeates the supplement is whether to stay at home
or travel to a destination in which the dollar is still valued. And so
Croatia offers itself as a destination in which they can enjoy a picture
of unspoiled natural beauty and beaches which are being visited by an
increasing number of other world travellers and where a holiday, according
to the experts of the New York Times, will cost 30 percent less than on
the previously famed French Riviera.

The
Zadar region will this year for the first time appear on the program of
the British tour operator “Holiday Options” which will in the week before
Easter begin with weekly flights of British guests to Zadar airport, which
will continue until the end of October.
“Holiday
Options” is the largest British tour operator for Croatia, which last year
brought over 22.000 British tourists or the same number that the remaining
four British tour operators brought over, who also offer Croatia in their
programs.
In previous
years, “Holiday Options” operated exceptionally well along the entire
Adriatic coast, from Istria to Split and Dubrovnik and only the region of
the City of Zadar was missing in their programs. To date a certain number
of seats on charter flights which will be leaving from London’s Gatwick
airport have been reserved for it. According to recent announcements in
2006 the number of flights towards Zadar will probably increase given that
it is expected that traffic towards this central Dalmatian city will be
excellent, as was the case up to now with the other mentioned Adriatic
destinations.
Namely, presently the state of sales of holidays on the Adriatic in Great
Britain by this tour operator are 33 percent better than last year and
this for the entire region of the Adriatic, which has definitely
contributed to the widening of the program and charter links with Zadar as
well. This in turn contributes to greater expectations and an increase in
flights for next year as well.

Split -Spectacular celebrations of the 1700 anniversary of the city
Throughout
this entire year the citizens of the City of Split will be officially
celebrating the jubilee 1700th anniversary of the existence of
their city, that is the great anniversary of the most famous symbol of
Split, the Diocletian palace from which the city rose forth. Let us remind
you, that the Diocletian palace is a cultural monument under UNESCO
protection.
To ensure
that festivities will be at the grand level that this anniversary demands,
the Tourist board of the City of Split and the City of Split have
developed a whole year spectacular program which will tell the world it is
the Year of the Palace.
This structure, built at the end of the 3rd century, is one of
the most important pieces of late antic architecture and one of the best
preserved monuments of Roman architecture in the world. The Palace was
constructed as a luxurious summer residence for the Emperor Diocletian and
was positioned with the boundaries of a Roman military camp and with two
main streets was divided into four parts.
After 1700
years of coexistence, Split residents are getting ready for four
significant presentation of their Palace in the world – in Budapest,
Krakow, Graz and New York. The rich cultural heritage will be presented at
11 international fairs.
In
February, in the Split hotel Park, an exhibition “Split 1700” was opened,
presenting monographics of the Palace and the city, while throughout the
year numerous other events significant to the city will also be presented.
Beginning with the “Split krnjevala” – a carnival where guests are
treated to songs by Dalmatian klapa (acapello groups), parades of
marching girls and performances by numerous folkloric groups.
Not to
mention the traditional Split manifestations like the Split summer
festival which is being held for the 51st time this year and
which will take place with a celebratory spirit.
The main
ceremony will be held on the 29th of July – with the
performance “Noć Dioklecijana” (Diocletian’s Night) when a thematic
evening will be organised – where all will become better acquainted with
old Roman culture. Namely, all guests in Split will be able to taste
ancient Roman specialties and enjoy in a costume parade.

Island of Brač -Construction of an elite summer residence for tourists
This year
the Split company SEM 1986 began with the realisation of the program SEM
apartment (suite) hotels on Dalmatian islands. The first in a series of
projects is a hotel in the tourist centre Supetar on the central Dalmatian
island of Brač, whose completion is expected by the middle of this year’s
summer season.
The
program, worth about two million Euros, is based on the tradition of
Dalmatian summer residences, or more precisely the unity of exterior and
interior space and the integration of the facility into the environment.
This
specific form of tourist offer is earmarked for elite guests and the
presentation of the assets of the City of Supetar and Island of Brač.
The
accommodation facilities of the hotel will extend over 600 square metres
on two floors, with a courtyard and gardens on 2, 5 thousand square
metres.
Autochthonous Dalmatian atmosphere will be architecturally achieved by
using authentic Brač stone and traditional flat roofs, including a
horticultural selection of Mediterranean plants which will ensure guests
are enveloped with the authentic island scent all year round.
With this
Brač pilot project will be built a total of ten apartments. Three
apartments will be 23 square metres in size and will not include kitchens,
while the other apartments will be 70 square metres in size and will offer
a modern equipped kitchen.
However,
regardless of the kitchen, in the complex of apartment hotels, there will
also be offered a small dinning room in which all guests will be offered
breakfast.
As far as
the activity part of the “summer residence” is concerned – guests will
have at their disposal a pool and small centre with a fitness gym.

Dubrovnik: Excursioners
greeted by a galleon form the old Dubrovnik Republic
Slowly but
surely the construction of a replica of a Dubrovnik galleon, once the
largest and most impressive ship of the fleet of the Dubrovnik Republic,
is finally drawing to a close.
This
unusual vessel, which is being built for a Dubrovnik travel agency, is 27
metres in length and 7, 5 metres wide. Other than the sails which “power“
the ship, the galleon also has at its disposal two ship motors which will
be able to carry up to 200 passengers on one day trips.
It is
expected that the galleon will be finished by the beginning of May this
year when it will begin one day excursion tours from Dubrovnik to the
islands and attractive locations.
The entire
ship is constructed from the highest quality wood – domestic oak and pine
and it is expected that the boat, with maintenance of course, will be able
to sail for the next hundred years.
In this way
guests of Dubrovnik will be able to enjoy in the galleon which represents
a typical though small picture of the once small but powerful Dubrovnik
Republic.

Crikvenica-Vinodol Riviera
New tourist walking paths being constructed
In the
region of the northern Adriatic cities Crikvenica and Novi Vinodolski, the
construction and landscaping of 160 km of walking path – a pedestrian
tourist path which will connect the coast and mountainous part of this
region, will begin soon.
The paths
were envisaged in such a manner that they can be traversed by walking, by
bicycle, public transport and small vehicles and to ensure their
accessibility to all those interested, the paths will have may access
paths which will lead to all tourist locations.
The construction project
foresees that the starting points of the paths will be in front of local
tourist boards, while access points will be at all important intersections
and bus stops.
One complete whole, called the marine pulse, will be represented by paths
which will connect the coastal part – from the locality Jadranovo to
Plovila, with the mountain areas which extend from the region of Drvenik
to Ledenica. Therefore in close vicinity to the City of Novi Vinodolski.
This part of the path will be about 80 km long and connected to it will be
access paths from every location on the coast and smaller localities in
the Vinodol valley. In this way the paths will be divided into five
smaller paths and everyone will be able to choose a path to suit their
physical fitness and wishes.
The other
complete whole will be the paths in the mountain region which will connect
the most beautiful areas and mountain belvederes in the forest areas.
Access paths from all surrounding areas will also connect to the path.
The paths
will be conceived so that on one side they will offer a view of the coast
and islands while on the other, a view of the valley and the mountain
hinterland. As the paths will pass along some old castle ruins and
chapels, hikers will be able to become better acquainted with the cultural
heritage of this region.
The whole project, which should be finished by the end of this year, was
developed so that with the varying in climate, vegetation, fauna, way of
life and culture, every walker may discover something new and unknown,
while at the same time get better acquainted with the area in which they
are staying. Namely, the initial project will also be supplemented by the
construction of new coastal paths from the locality Jadranovo to Novi
Vinodolski which in turn will be connected to the path marine pulse and in
this way will create a complete whole for every settlement along the
coast.

Zagreb - The renovated Hotel Astoria part of the Best Western Hotel
chain
Hotel
Astoria which is located in the very centre of the City of Zagreb will
soon, after being completely renovated, again open its doors. Also new of
course is the fact that the hotel will begin working under the name of the
well known world chain Best Western and will bear also carry the
prestigious name Premier, which only about sixty of their hotels around
the world carry. There are about 4200 hotels in the Best Western chain of
hotels.
Also new is
the new conversion of the hotel which once attracted “common” tourists,
but after the renovation of a small congress centre the number of business
guests is expected to increase. The congress centre will offer three
multipurpose congress halls with a total of about 100 seats and will be
equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment.
The new
Hotel Astoria will have three star category, but it offer will be such
that it can certainly be able to compete with hotels of higher standards.
Thus guests will have at their disposal renovated accommodation facilities
and along with the already mentioned congress centre, on the ground floor
will be located a hotel restaurant and aperitif bar.
Let us also
mention, that the Hotel Astoria, just like all Best Western Premier hotels
will have all their set standard services like a coffee machine in each

The
Istrian Y highway
For a pleasant break while travelling
On the
Istrian Y – a highway running through the interior of all Istria, this
summer will be opened the first tourist-catering facility in which
travellers will be able to refresh themselves and briefly enjoy the
autochthonous charms of Istria.
The
facility will be constructed close to the largest Istrian city Pula. It
will actually rise up from an existing kažun – typical Istrian
stone house.
The
facility will actually also be called Kažun and according to the existing
plans the construction will extend over about 150 square metres. Added to
the existing kažun will be a spacious terrace whose appearance will
also show the autochthonous Istrian style of building. Along side it will
be built another smaller kažun in which will be offered wine, olive
oil and traditional Istrian souvenirs and along with all of this
travellers will also have at their disposal an exchange office.
Also
planned next to these facilities, is a children’s playground and new
sanitary facilities, however this investment will have to wait a while.
The
official opening of the Kažun has been announced for the end of
April, which should be an intro for the opening of the second section of
the Istrian Y highway, from Medak to Umag, which should be finished by the
middle of May.

As part of
the Park Prevlaka which is located on the peninsula of the same name at
the southern most point of Croatia, an attractive adrenaline park was
opened last year. Today it offers guests heaps of fun, organised
excursions and tours of military catacombs. Namely, Prevlaka was once a
peninsula owned by the military and today there are still many military
relics like the mentioned catacombs, ditches and trenches. Other than
tours of these catacombs, already today, for guests we often organise
programs like treasure hunts or thematic programs especially adjusted for
team building. Along with this, the Park also abounds with an extensive
offer for athletes, adventurers and usual tourists looking for an active
holiday.
Currently
on offer is the popular war game – paintball for which three locations
have been constructed, while in case of rain the players head in halls
which have been specifically done up for this type of entertainment. Other
than this, three artificial hills have been constructed in the area for
climbers and today it represents the largest centre for sports climbing in
the entire Dubrovnik County.
On the other hand those tourists who want to get better acquainted with
the whole peninsula have bikes at their disposal and from the beginning of
May, with the arrival of much nicer and warmer days, guests will also be
able to enjoy the training range for ATV motors with four wheels, so
called buggies. Namely, the training range will be arranged so that it
offers guests adrenaline drives which will be improved by smaller jumps so
that guests can have even more fun!
That not all though, the Park managers are planning a very attractive
swing for guests, similar to bungee jumping, which will be mounted at a
height of 12 m so that guests will be able to jump from nearby buildings
and enjoy free flying in the large swing. Given that it has firm ropes and
is positioned at a much lower height than bungee jumping, it will be able
to be used by nearly all age groups.

Rijeka
will soon be richer for another hotel. Namely, Mr. Goran Štrok, the owner
of one of the largest hotel chains in Croatia “Jadranski luksuzni hoteli”
(Adriatic luxury hotels) recently leased in Rijeka the popular Rijeka
“Costabella”. It is a smaller sports-tourism complex at one of the most
attractive positions in the city of Rijeka which extends over a total of
2094 square metres and which Mr. Goran Štrok has lease for the next 30
years.
Up until
now the inadequately used tourist facility “Costabella” upon entering the
group “Jadranski luksuzni hoteli” will be crowned with a high four star
standard. The total accommodation capacity will be twenty luxuriously
decorated rooms and two apartments, including also a restaurant and café
bar with a terrace.
The
“Costabella” area other than accommodation facilities, which are expected
to be open by the middle of June this year, from next year will also offer
guests new recreational facilities like tennis courts and fitness centre
and small wellness centre which will be open for guests and Rijeka
residents, or – all guests of the City of
“Costabella»” is located very close to the high quality hotel “Grand Hotel
Bonavia Park Plaza” – a hotel which has long been a member of the group
“Jadranski luksuzni hoteli”. As this hotel is located in the centre of
town and up until now has not had a direct link with the beach, this new
complex will significantly bring it closer to the beach and sea.
