Đurđevac: Candidate for selection of the European Destination of Excellence

The Town of Đurđevac will represent Croatia in the European Destination of Excellence competition to be held 18 and 19 September in Bordeaux, France. Đurđevac won the right to participate in a very tough competition of 27 candidates in Croatia, among which the Committee of CNTB’s Head Office selected the national winner according to the criteria set for the project. The European Destination of Excellence competition has been held since 2006, involving all European Union Member States. Although Croatia is not an EU member, it has been invited to join, so it has been involved in the action from the beginning. This year, it is organized on the subject of “Tourism and Local Intangible Heritage”.
Popular for its various cultural, sport and other attractive events such as Podravina From Summer to Summer, Mamas Baked Some Štrukli, Welcome Friends, etc., Đurđevac is particularly distinctive for its Legend of the Roosters (Picoki). The traditional cultural & entertainment event, which has been organized for forty years, illustrates the historical and traditional heritage of the region, and this attractive tourist product maintains the legend of the locals’ craftiness in this part of Koprivnica-Križevci County.
The Croatian Ministry of Culture has proclaimed the Legend of the Roosters intangible cultural domain. The legend is associated with an old story about a long siege of Ulama-Beg’s Turkish army and his intention to force the people of Đurđevac captured in the Old Town to surrender due to hunger. However, following the advice of an old lady, the defenders outwitted the Beg by firing their last rooster out of a cannon into the Turkish camp, thus creating the impression they had food to waste. Believing they had plenty of food, Ulama-Beg retreated with his army and the people of Đurđevac have been referred to as the Roosters ever since.
However, numerous visitors to Đurđevac do not come here just for the legend, but for various other facilities making the region popular because the area contains famous hunting grounds and the naďve road passes here as this is the region where naďve painting was conceived. Đurđevac has an art gallery containing paintings donated by the famous Croatian naďve painter Lacković Croata, whose works have been exhibited in many galleries around the world, and the area also has 45 kilometers of bike tracks, etc.

EVENTS

Cultural heritage: Apoxiomen travels across Croatia
On its journey through Croatian museums, the famous statue of Apoxiomen arouses great interest among the local and international public. This is one of the few preserved large Greek bronze statues in the world, which has so far been exhibited in Zagreb, Florence and Osijek. It is currently available for viewing at the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral in Rijeka, where it will be displayed until 25 June, after which it will be moved to Split.
The bronze statue of a young athlete scraping a layer of dust and oil from his naked body dates back to the 4th century B.C., and was accidentally discovered by a Belgian tourist under the sea around the Island of Lošinj, near the islet of Vela Orjula. It was retrieved from the sea in 1999 and restored at the Croatian Conservation Institute with the help of experts from Florence. Last year, it won the European Union’s award for cultural heritage among 152 registered specimens of preserved heritage coming from 32 countries.
The bronze statute has an inestimable artistic value, and there are indications it could have been made by the famous ancient sculptor Lysippos. Only one other specimen was found in Ephesus in the 19th century and is now exhibited at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. There are a few replicas of the Apoxiomen in the world, but they are made from different materials.
After exhibiting the statue of the Greek athlete in numerous Croatian cities, the Apoxiomen will be permanently exhibited in a museum in Mali Lošinj, in the area where the bronze statue was found.

Krk: A town of history and culture

3 to 7 June, the culture & sport event entitled “A Gift to St. Quirin” will be held in the town of Krk, popular for its numerous cultural events, Krk Fair and various events with preserved traditional features. The event will mark the day of St. Quirin, guardian of the Krk Bishopric and the town of Krk, and will begin by the raising of the Blue Flag. This will also mark the seventh anniversary of its mounting on Krk’s beaches. In addition to performances by harmony singers, the town choir and town band, guest performances by international musicians and exhibition, this year’s multi-day event will include the first town race and the 7th Sport Recreation Festival for the Elderly. In late June, Krk will also host the traditional music festival “Melodies of Istria and Kvarner”.
Proclaimed a town of history and culture, Krk existed as a developed urban center of the island three thousand years ago. That is why every one of its churches, castles, houses and stairways illustrates a true historical treasure. The town is dominated by the cathedral next to the Frankopan Castle, which was first mentioned in written documents in 1186. The cathedral was dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary, and its extensions added throughout many centuries have combined various styles – Romanic, gothic, renaissance and baroque. The cathedral contains Matser Koler’s silver altarpiece, donated to the church by Ivan Frankopan in 1477, while the unique early-Romanic Church of St. Quirin, the town’s guardian, leans on the cathedral. The church is made of local white stone, and is unique for being erected on two levels. An interesting fact mentioned in written documents is that convicts from the nearby courtroom came to attend Mass on the ground floor of the church. The complex also contains a museum of sacral art with very interesting exhibits of great historical value.

Dubrovnik: Five hundred years with the great Marin Držić

This year, the appealing and ever-attractive Dubrovnik, distinctive for its view of the Old Town, lives for the 500th birth anniversary of one of the greatest European comedy writers, Marin Držić Vidra. As the year 2008 was pronounced the Year of Držić in Croatia, many cultural events are associated with the opus of this great Croatian writer, whose work never ceases to delight the audience. Although Držić’s works are regularly included in the Dubrovnik Summer Games program, this year it will dominate the cultural festival. Residents of Dubrovnik and their guests will be able to feel the spirit of Držić’s times in all catering and hotel facilities and on the stairs of the Old Town that have always conveyed the words of this unsurpassed intellectual of his era.
Thanks to the artistic inspiration, the characters in Držić’s comedies «Dundo Maroje» and «Skup» or pastorals such as «Grižula» and «Tirena» have not lost their currency to date. Through his misers, old senile men, deadbeats and cuckolds, Držić speaks not only of the flaws and vices of his contemporaries, but of human fears, character and behavior. The Dubrovnik City Theater now bears the name of this great comedy writer, and the Home of Marin Držić offers an insight to his work and life.
In addition to the cultural events associated with the life and work of Marin Držić, Dubrovnik’s offer truly makes it a cultural center, with a number of attractive programs prepared for June. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the Church of St. Salvation organizes a program entitled Concerts in Candlelight. Every Saturday and Sunday, the Dubrovnik Chamber Trio and the Dubrovnik Brass Trio perform at the Domino Church, and they also announced a series of concerts by the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra and the Linđo folklore troupe. In June, they will organize the 2nd International Concert Cycle Musica Eterna, the 4th Libertas Film Festival, and many other events.

Mali Lošinj: World Parachuting Cup

After 23 years, Mali Lošinj will once again host the World Parachuting Cup. The competition, sponsored by the Croatian Ministry of Culture, will be held 6 to 8 June, and will include around two hundred participants from some 20 countries.
Considering the ideal weather conditions, quality accommodation and sport capacities, and existence of an airport, the organizer of the competition, Parachuting Club Krila Kvarner of Rijeka, initiated the idea of organizing the World Parachuting Cup in Mali Lošinj last August. Two weeks before the competition, the exhibition program began, where anyone brave enough and yearning for adrenaline had the chance to try double jumps – of course, with the instructors. The organizers are convinced the World Parachuting Cup will continue to be organized in Mali Lošinj in the future due to the ideal conditions provided by this destination for a competition in this type of sport.
In addition to Croatia, parachuting competitions are held in five other European countries, and they are organized by Bled, Slovenia, Altenstadt, Germany, Belluno, Italy, Salzburg, Austria, and Locarno, Switzerland.

THE WORLD AND US
Surveys: Croatia – a travel brand on the rise

According to the Country Brand Index 2007 survey, where the FutureBrand agency measured the country brand strengths for the third time, Croatia was once again pronounced the number one “rising star”. As the authors of the survey said, the purpose of the survey is to help countries on their way to their increasingly important travel branding.
As a brand of future, this year Croatia was better than the second-place China, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, South Africa, Cuba, Iceland, Poland, Russian Federation and Argentina. Specifically commended for its rich historical heritage and a series of island and coastal tourist centers, Croatia was predicted to become an even more esteemed tourist destination over the next five years.
The Country Brand Index has thus joined the increasingly large number of surveys confirming Croatia’s and its destinations’ important place on the tourist map of Europe and the world.

The New York Times: Ideal holiday in Croatian lighthouses

A Sunday edition of the prestigious daily The New York Times has recently published a lengthy report about lighthouses on Croatian islands. In the very inspired report, reporter Jon Bowermaster wrote about the unforgettable holiday provided by the lighthouses, arranged along the entire Adriatic containing 1200 islands. The American reporter stated that, out of the 48 lighthouses in Croatia built by the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Francis Joseph in the 19th century, 11 of them provide tourists with the possibility of spending a magnificent holiday there in an idyllic and isolated surrounding. For a little more money, they can rent accommodation in well-equipped apartments where lighthouse keepers used to live and spend their holiday in peace and isolation. Jon Bowermaster himself stayed in three lighthouses – on the Island of Palagruža, on the islet of Sušac twenty minutes by boat from Korčula, and on the Island of Lastovo – they were all a special experience. In addition to descriptions of the wonderful natural ambience with coves and narrow paths ideal for exploring the islands, specialties made of freshly caught crabs, seashells and fish or fresh food supplied from the mainland, Jon Bowermaster ended the text with the following invitation: »Just come, relax, and you may never want to leave ».
