Women’s slalom at the Audi FIS World Cup “VIP Snow Queen Trophy 2009” will be held on January 4, while the men skiers’ competition will be held on January 6, with both races taking place at night.
Except excellent trail and top organisation, the World Cup is traditionally known for unique atmosphere created with the city interaction, its inhabitants and the participants of the competition.
Zagreb is one of the rare European capitals having a park near the city centre which can be walked to. Mount Medvednica and its highest point – Sljeme (1033 metres) are an interesting destination for Zagreb inhabitants and their guests in winter and summer. With great choices for rest and recreation, Sljeme attracts during the summer months because of considerably more pleasant climate and temperatures several degrees lower than in the city. During winter, Sljeme is a place for skiing, sledding and enjoying fresh air and winter idyll. Regardless of the weather, Zagreb residents and their guests use every free moment for escaping to nature, but also for the enjoyment in the catering contents. On Sljeme, there are many accommodation objects and the catering is well-known with many local specialities. Because of the intimate emotional connection between Zagreb and Sljeme, the residents host the skiing elite with a heartfelt welcome and they cheer on all the skiers equally.

Men’s World Handball Championship, January 16 – February 1, 2009
Seven Croatian Cities – hosts to the best handball players of the world

All those who remember the great play of Croatian handball players who won the world championship in 2003 in Portugal, the Olympic gold in 2004 in Athens, world championship silver in 2005 and European championship silver in 2008 in Norway will say that the world championship is being held in the right place, in a country of great and successful handball. From January 16 until February 1 of this year seven Croatian cities: Zagreb, Zadar, Split, Osijek, Varaždin, Poreč and Pula – will be the hosts to 24 world national teams.
In group A in Osijek the teams are France, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Argentina and Australia, in group B in Split Croatia, Sweden, Spain, South Korea, Kuwait and Cuba, in group C in Varaždin Germany, Poland, Macedonia, Russia, Tunisia and Algeria, and in group D in Poreč Denmark, Norway, Egypt, Brazil, Serbia and Saudi Arabia. The three best teams from groups A and B will play in the second round in Zagreb, and groups C and D in Zadar.
Semi-final games will be played in Zagreb and Split, and the finals will be played in the Arena in Zagreb, which will welcome 15 000 spectators. At the President Cup for places from 13 to 24 the teams who do not make the second round will play.
The 21st world handball championship is the biggest sports event in Croatia since its independence and it is certainly the most demanding project which included the construction of new sports arenas and hiring of a great number of professionals and volunteers. The Arena Zagreb, Spaladium Split, City Garden Osijek, Sports Centre Krešimir Čosić Zadar and Sports Home Mate Parlov Pula are top sports objects as well as polyvalent centres which will enrich the sports, entertainment and cultural offer of Croatia.
Considering the long tradition (the first handball game was played in Croatia in 1930) and the great results in this sport as well as with an audience which loves it, Croatia will without a doubt be a great host of this competition.
As the sports events like this have a tourist dimension, it is quite clear that Croatia will be a great host in that area as well. As an introduction, in 13 countries participants there were Croatian handball-tourist days and the tourist offer was presented with the accent on the host cities in which the games will be played. An equally heartfelt welcome and an invitation to enjoy the beauties and the offer is awaiting athletes, delegation members, journalists and supporters during their stay in Croatia.

Tourism for Everyone
The first European tour guide for the deaf is starting

The Zagreb tourist association will soon become the only tourist community in Europe with a licensed tour guide for the deaf. It will be Vanda Šagovac, the only deaf person who finished the tourism study in the Zagreb School for Management and by passing the expert exam, she realised her dream – to become a tour guide for the deaf. She finished her studies wishing for a job in tourism for the deaf population and population of damaged hearing of which there are 12 000 in Croatia. In 2006, she founded an association for the culture of the persons with damaged hearing World of Quiet which has for a goal connecting culture and tourism for the deaf and promoting this kind of tourist services for persons with special needs. The mission of the association is not only the promotion of culture of the deaf, but also the promotion of Croatian tourism through activities in international competitions of deaf artists.
The interest of the Ministry of Tourism of Croatia in offering guide services for invalids is witnessed by the fact that the highest tourist institution is entirely financing the expenses of the seminar for tourist guides.
“Everyone has a right to tourism, regardless of our differences, and the Ministry of Tourism, with its Social Tourism strategy, which is a European pioneering project, will give the support intensively to “tourism for everyone,” said Minister of Tourism Damir Bajs and emphasised that the Ministry with its “Tourism without Obstacles” gives financial incentives for investments in the tourist infrastructure for disabled persons.
It is important to say that the Zagreb Tourist Board will cover the financial expenses of the first 50 disabled persons’ tour. The support for the future first tourist guide for persons with special needs, Vanda Šagovac, was given by the representative of the Association of Croatian Travel Agencies, emphasising that local agencies will be able to offer what nobody else has and that they are ready to create interesting arrangements for the groups of tourists with special needs.

Rijeka International Carnival
The fifth season starts January 23

The beginning of the year is when in all of Croatia, especially on Kvarner, everything is in the sign of “mesopust” activities and carnival. Numerous Kvarner cities and places burn at the stake the “mesopust” or “pust” for short, the doll which is “guilty” for all bad things in the previous year and at the same time, they are chasing the winter away. All the manifestations are deeply rooted in the customs of this area and they are an attraction for tourists, for whom it is the most attractive content during their stay in the Kvarner region. Still, for the tourists, especially attractive is the Rijeka International Carnival which will take place between January 23 and February 22 for the 26th time.
Rijeka International Carnival – registered as one of the most important carnival happenings in the world – starts on January 23 with the selection of the carnival queen and handing out of the key to the city. The entire month will be joyous in Rijeka and Kvarner, and on February 14, there will be children’s carnival procession. The culmination of the Rijeka carnival is on February 22 at noon when in the centre of Rijeka the international carnival procession begins. In it, it is estimated, there will be more than 10,000 participants and there are more than 150 000 spectators on the streets of Rijeka from the country and around the world.
Since the carnival time is different than any other time and there are different rules in it, it is also called “the fifth season,” which is held under the motto “be what you want, come to Rijeka carnival.”

Island of Brač
Sixty years of “Zlatni rat”

In October of last year, hotel company Zlatni rat – whose headquarters are in Bol on Brač – celebrated six decades of successful operation. Zlatni rat, which got its name by the same name world famous Bol beach, is among the most successful Croatian tourist companies.
Founded on October 17, 1948, Zlatni rat started with only a few guest rooms and later it increased its capacity every year. The turnaround in its development was the opening of the hotel Bijela kuća, made with an adaptation of a student home. During that time, an accelerated growth of hotel capacity started, and during the 70s, hotels Elaphusa and Borak are opened and one decade later, hotel complex Bretanide and in 1999, hotel complex Bonaca.
Zlatni rat today has 1,600 beds in three hotels, which are operating as part of the Croatian hotel chain Blue Sun. There are 180 employees in the company, and this year hotel Grand Elaphusa should put the fifth star on its entrance.
Zlatni rat – which is the majority owner of Brač Airport – has strongly marked the tourism development of Bol, island of Brač, as well as entire Croatia and it counts among the most popular destinations in the country.

Zagreb County
Traditional food and architecture saved for the future

It is rare that the county decisions are unanimous as was the case last year with the decision of the Zagreb County Assembly when the decision was on declaring an ecologically significant area. With it, Zagreb region was declared an area free of genetically modified organisms.
With this decision, Zagreb region became one of 230 regions from 34 European countries in which the use of seed from genetically modified organisms is banned, as well as the production of genetically modified food.
The gastronomy of this region is a combination of traditional and modern cuisine with a large choice of authentic food and drinks, especially wine. Known for its rich catering offer, which includes different food in village households along with traditional restaurants, Zagreb and the region offer many authentic meals in whose recognisable tastes the guests have enjoyed so far, and the hosts are, judging by the decision of Zagreb Assembly, decisive in keeping the tradition from the influence of GMO’s for their sake, as well as their guests sake.
To save the authenticity of the region’s offer, Zagreb County also gives out means such as the support for buying and renewing exclusively traditional houses with the condition that all conditions of the traditional architecture and construction are respected and that the objects be in the function of tourism. In 2008, Zagreb County gave out HRK 1 million for that purpose and the same support is going to be given out this year.

Ogulin
Welcome to the world of fairy tales

The cultural-tourist project Ogulin fairy tale festival, based on the legacy of tales and stories, was presented at the end of last year at the Berlin fairy tale festival, the biggest festival of the kind in the world. The cooperation of Ogulin and Berlin on fairy tale projects continues at mutual satisfaction, but mostly at the satisfaction of all those enjoying the world of fairy tales.
The main theme of Berlin fairy tale days was storytelling and imagined interpretations of fairy tales, but also the modern stories for children and adults performed by educate storytellers or famous writers. Ogulin fairy tale festival, which was held for the third time in 2008 and which hosted the Berlin festival, was positively welcomed at the presentation in the German Centre for fairy tale culture. On that occasion, further cooperation between the two festivals on common projects was agreed upon, it was found out at the “Muze” studio for cultural management from Zagreb.
Ogulin fairy tale festival is a unique international project which, through celebration of fairy tales and creativity, makes and shows art and cultural production for kids, youth and adults. It was inspired by the creativity of the most famous Croatian children writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić (1874-1938) who was born in Ogulin. Its goal is to promote art and cultural production meant for all the generations and the scenes are named after the characters from the tales of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić – scenes, Regoč, Kosjenka, Potjeh, Stribor, etc. In 2008, this manifestation takes place from June 1 to June 14, and on June 10, the pre-festival shows for kids and everyone else who enjoys the imaginative world of fairy tales are on.
It is interesting to mention that in 2010 in Ogulin there should be a multimedia centre “Ivana’s House of Fairy Tales,” whose goal will be multimedia informative programmes meant for affirmation of fairy tales and the writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. With that, Ogulin will become a unique destination of cultural tourism in Croatia and the wider European region and it will improve the quality of the offer throughout the year. Developmental project of cultural tourism “Ogulin – a place of fairy tales” was presented at the conference Creative Clusters in Glasgow. The main themes of last year’s conference, held from November 17-27 in Edinburgh and Glasgow, were creative economies in small countries, new technology and film, festival cultural policies and strategic guidance in the area of creative economy. Development cultural-tourist project “Ogulin – a place of fairy tales,” based on the legacy of fairy tales and stories, was presented together with two successful projects from Scotland and Norway with the theme of storytelling, and numerous colleagues and the audience judged it as innovative and inspiring.

Vrgorac
One hundred years of organised tourism

At the beginning of December of last year, the tourist association of Vrgorac marked 100 years since the foundation of the Beautification society of Vrgorac, a precursor of later tourist societies and associations. It is interesting that the society was founded in 1908, and that it had a statute and 80 members even then. Ever since then, Vrgorac becomes more and more interesting to the vacationers who enjoy the authentic gastronomy – prosciutto, cheese, bread and meat, honey and wine. This area is also known for its ethnic tourism and in the area of Vrgorac there are two ethnic villages, Kokorići and Veliki Godinj.
The one hundred year anniversary of organised tourism Vrgorac welcomed with a 15% increase of the number of guests related to 2007, and the most numerous were the tourists from France, Norway and Sweden for whom there are special tours. Tourists also find the birth house of the poet Tin Ujević interesting, as well as theme happenings such as Strawberry Days and Bikla Days (traditional drink). Infrastructure

Motorways
Beauties of Dalmatia even closer

The modern motorway network, which makes the tourist destinations in Croatia more and more accessible to the guests from entire Europe, has more kilometres since the end of 2008, which make Dalmatia even closer than before.
At the end of the year, the construction of the new part of the motorway from Šestanovac through Zagvozd to Ravča 40 kilometres long. With the opening of new kilometres of the motorway A1 leading from Zagreb to Split and continues to Dubrovnik, another demanding part of the motorway in Dalmatia was finished. Considering that the new part goes through attractive areas of Zabiokovlje, to many places along the way – Zagvozd, Vrgorac, etc., possibilities for a stronger development of tourism are opening. The trip to Zagreb is that way shortened to four hours and tourists can come to Ploče and tourist destinations in Dubrovačko-neretvanska County more quickly.
With the end of construction of this part, at the end of the year ten kilometres of a motorway from Ploče to the future knot Ploče I was constructed. At the knot, Dalmatia connects to the corridor 5c which goes through Hungary, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it connects Budapest with Osijek, Sarajevo and Ploče. Besides the upcoming opening of those two parts, the tunnel Sv. Ilija through Biokovo is being constructed, whose finishing will make the area of Zabiokovlje even closer to the coast and in a traffic and tourist sense symbolically connected into a whole.

Investments

Trakošćan
New four-star hotel is all set to open its doors in September

Close to the Trakošćan castle, at the spot of the hotel built 45 years ago and renewed twice, in September of the year 2009, the new four-star hotel will start operating – the Coning Trakošćan Hotel. The hotel will be for more demanding clientele, foremost for business people who will, in a unique ambiance of the beautiful castle Trakošćan, a monument legacy, be able to hold meetings, congresses and other gatherings. As Trakošćan is less than an hour drive from the capital Zagreb and close to the beautiful Baroque city of Varaždin, it is quite certain that it will attract many guests with its ambiance, quality and location.
The investment will be done in two phases, each of which will be worth HRK 40 million. In the first phase, whose end is forecast for September of this year, there will be a new hotel instead of the old one with a 125-room capacity, three restaurants and a large hall for dining for up to 350 people and a terrace with a view of the castle, park, forest and lake. Since it is a valuable cultural monument, the internal hotel decoration will remind the guests of the closeness of the monument whose oldest parts are from the 13th century.
The guests will also be able to use the large hall, covered pool and garage, and the existing sports activities will be expanded and organised. Equally, for guests there will be field trips, biking, Nordic walking, riding and other services.
Within the hotel, a wellness centre is planned, and after decorating in the second phase, a golf course is planned as well as several bungalows behind the hotel which will look like they are in a traditional Zagorje village even though they will be of modern interior.
