The Island of Ugljan
Construction
of the first marina on the island underway
After
the Government of the Republic of Croatia approved a concession for the
construction of a marina in the cove Sutomiščica, which is located near the
fishing villages Kali and Preko on the northern Dalmatian Island of Ugljan,
the representatives of the concessionaire presented the entire construction
project of the first marina on this island to the public.
According to
plans, the marina will have a total of 203 berths and will be located in a
natural cove in the very centre of the town and will extend about 55
thousand square metres seaward and about 150 square metres on land. The
future marina will be, according to the details of the existing plan, nearly
completely constructed on the embankment while the berths will be erected on
pontoons under which the sea will freely flow, thus ensuring ideal
conditions for protection of the environment.
Each berth
will have electricity and water connections, as well as the possibility of
use of wireless internet connections. As far as the on shore facility is
concerned, the marina will offer its guests a restaurant, reception, bar,
store with nautical equipments, supermarket, pool, boat service centre and
large parking area. According to investors’ announcements it will be a
unique combination of traditional-local and modern architecture.
The marina
will be built in two phases. The completion of the first phase which
includes the construction of the embankment, breakwater and erection of
pontoons with accompanying infrastructure is planned for the beginning of
the next summer season when it is expected that the marina should play host
to its first nautical guests.
In the second
phase the construction of the remaining accompanying facilities and content
and in this way the entire marina should be completed by the season in 2006.

New Hotel Peristil open
Recently a
new hotel was officially opened next to the Srebrenih vrata (Silver doors)
in Split. The hotel in question is the Hotel Peristil which has been
constructed at the location of an old boarding house and because of its
conservational heritage value it took six long years for its construction.
The new Hotel
Peristil now offers guests of the City of Split 12 new luxuriously equipped
rooms with a total of 21 beds. All rooms are equipped to meet three star
standards and even greater as the rooms have a mini-bar, internet
connection, safe, air-conditioner and other necessary content.
The hotel
also has a restaurant and the renovation of its cellar into a congress hall,
which will be transformed into a piano bar at night where guests and
citizens of the City of Split will be able to have fun into the early hours
of the morning, is planned soon.
The owners of
the hotel have also announced the construction of a dome at the top of the
hotel in which a bar with a small terrace will be situated and if
conservators allow a glass lift is also planned which would be located in
the interior of the double walls of the famous Split Diocletian’s Palace.

The Southern Adriatic
The Lastovo archipelago to become a Nature
Park
The
archipelago of the Island of Lastovo, one of the longest Adriatic islands,
could soon be declared a new Croatian Nature Park. The project to have it
declared a Nature Park began four years ago however the matter itself was
only seriously considered and acted upon recently. Namely, up until now
there have been a whole series of plans for this island but although they
would have brought economic benefit to its inhabitants, these have been
abandoned so as not to endanger the natural balance on the island.
By declaring
it a Nature Park, however, the situation on the island will not be
significantly altered. It will however guarantee better economic and tourist
growth to the entire archipelago, with an emphasis on environmental
protection, traditional agricultural production and non-massive tourism.
Among the
emphasised natural assets of the Lastovo archipelago are listed the 44
islands, islets, cliffs and reefs, the very indented relief, rocky shores,
forests, habitats of endemic and rare plants and animals, followed by
numerous cultural, sacral and historical architecture, archaeological
localities and traditional heritage.
Along with
all this, the declaring of a Nature Park will further encourage traditional
agricultural production which would encompass the rejuvenation of abandoned
fields and as there have been no announcements to date regarding
restrictions in the areas of fishing, hunting and forestry, the local
inhabitants will be able to continue living as they have up to now.
There will be
restrictions placed only in areas of special natural wealth like for example
the Island of Sušac, part of the islet in the immediate vicinity of Lastovo,
the lush pine tree forest and sandy cove in Jurjevo cove at Prejžbi, the
spring Lokanj, the fields Pržina, Prgovo and Studenac, Veje and Male cliffs,
all pools, caves, the group of islands Lastovnjaci and Vrhovnjaci and many
other localities.
As far as
tourism is concerned, a greater emphasis has been placed on encouraging
alternative forms of tourism, holidays in rural households and generally in
the enjoyment of nature. Nautical guests, who have up to now freely anchored
along the island, will now have to pay for this service so as to better
regulate marine traffic and also to protect the coastline.

The best Croatian beaches
The so called “Zagreb sea” among the best
The
so called “Zagreb sea” – the Jarun Lake – the favourite sports and
recreational centre of the inhabitants of Zagreb, the capital city of
Croatia – has three of the five best Croatian beaches. This is the
assessment rendered at the recently held national seminar for Blue flags.
Competing were 98 Croatian beaches, of which 94 are by the sea, while the
remaining four are beaches along continental bathing areas.
The other two
awards went to beaches in the northern Adriatic island Krk and the Istrian
city Poreč. The three awards which were presented to the popularly called
“Zagreb sea” went to the beaches Otok Trešnjevke, Otok Univerzijade and
southern beach of the Big lake which were all awarded because of the
exceptional water quality, orderliness of the coastal area of the bathing
area, lifeguard service and sanitary facilities.
With such exceptional awards
presented to the beaches of the “Zagreb sea”, which just goes to show that
maintenance throughout the whole year truly pays off, the representatives of
the Sports and Recreation Centre Jarun announced that in the upcoming summer
season they expect another two Blue flags to fly – on the Small lake and
Otok veslača – and in this way the inhabitants of Zagreb and their guest
will be able to bathe in five completely well kept, clean and safe beaches.

Youth Hostel Dubrovnik
Among the best in the world
The
American publishing company “Let’s go publications” which deals with quality
assessment of hostels has for the second year in a row declared the
Dubrovnik Youth Hostel as one of the best five hostels in Europe and this on
the basis of their own assessment. Namely, representatives of this company
stayed in the assessed hostels without the owners of the hostels knowing who
they were so that the assessments were completely objective. This is
especially true for the Youth Hostel Dubrovnik which along with the
acknowledgement received by the company “Let’s go publications”, also
received acknowledgement by the organisation “International Youth Hostel
Federation” which has for the fourth time in a row ranked it among the best
ten hostels in the world.
The Dubrovnik hostel offers a total of 82 beds and last year it was full for
a total of 200 days.
Demand for accommodation in the hostel is such that in the summer season an
additional two facilities with the same capacity could be filled. As a
result of this meetings have been held with the city administration and the
Croatian Youth Hostel Association regarding leasing of
certain facilities in Dubrovnik so that guests may be offered a greater
number of beds.

A luxurious hotel in the Lapad summer residence
The well
known summer residence Kazbek which dates back to the 16th
century and is located in Lapad, a renowned part of the City of Dubrovnik,
will soon be transformed into a small luxury hotel. Intensive work is
underway and if all goes as planned the hotel will be ready to greet its
first guests this summer.
The hotel
will be open throughout the whole year and will have at its disposal forty
beds, at the most, in 17 rooms and two luxury apartments.
Along with
the accommodation facilities it will also have a restaurant which will by no
means be ordinary. Namely, in it guests will be able to try various foods
but the greatest emphasis will be placed on the offer of cold entrees and
rich wine list.
The entire
summer residence was renovated under the control of the Dubrovnik
conservators of culture and the only section that has been added to it is
the high attic. On the large terrace which offers a view of the Dubrovnik
port of Gruž, a pool 12 x 10 metres in size has been dug. Other than this,
guests will also have at their disposal a large yacht on which they may sail
the Dubrovnik aquatorium.
The
entire investment into the renovation, that is reconstruction of the summer
residence Kazbek will amount to about 4 million Euros, however, given the
high quality offer of five star standard which is increasingly in demand in
Dubrovnik, its owner believes that his investment will be well worth it.

Šibenik
Renovation of the Hotel Jadran
With
the aim of offering its guests greater quality service and obtaining a
higher category rating, the owners of the Hotel Jadran in Šibenik recently
began its complete reconstruction. However, as the hotel is located within
the protected old city centre, it is impossible to construct new facilities
and so all work activities have been directed to the reconstruction and
better equipping of the interior of the hotel.
In this way,
the first floor of the hotel will be completely reconstructed which will
decrease the number of rooms but will at the same time increase their
quality and thus they will be of a four star standard.
Along with
the accommodation capacities, the hotel has a large restaurant, snack-bar,
summer terrace, tavern and conference hall because of which it enjoys a
reputation as a business hotel. Along with this, it is also an ideal hotel
for nautical guests because it is located along the very coastline and
offers it own berths for about 50 or so boats or yachts.

Rovinj
New investments into tourism
The Rovinj
company Adris group within which the hotel-tourist company Adria Resorts
operates, recently announced new substantial investments into tourism –
construction of new tourist capacities in the Istrian city of Rovinj.
The
investment in question is worth some 250 million Euros which will be used
for the construction of a new hotel-apartment settlement with four star
rating, located in the Rovinj region Monte Mulin.
About 50
million Euros will be invested into the first phase of construction which is
planned for this year. Namely, the existing units which are about 30 square
metres in size will be pulled down and in their place will be constructed
completely new tourist capacities on an area of about 26 thousand square
metres, which will, according to the announced project blend into the
natural environment.
In the second
phase of restructuring the Monte Mulin zone, which many Rovinj inhabitants
consider one of the most beautiful in their city, alterations to the Hotel
Montauro will begin in whose place an annex with about 250 beds will be
built. The Hotel Park, which also operates within the company Adria Resorts,
will have its interior completely renovated and will also get a new annex.
The second
phase is planned for the period from 2006 and 2008.

Zagreb
Host to the World championship in beach
volleyball
At the
beginning of June the City of Zagreb will be host to the Swatch FIVB World
Tour – World championship in beach volleyball for men. This will also mean
the official entry of the Croatian metropolis among the most significant
hosts of the 16 strongest world tournaments – like the one in Paris, Rio de
Janeiro, Shanghai, Cape town, Berlin, Rome, Montreal….
Namely,
Croatia has gained this title after four years of organising the VIP Tour
tournament and three challenger European series but with the summer
tournament in beach volleyball, held last summer on the Island of Rab, it
finally “passed” the test to become host to a world series tournament.
The
tournament will most probably be held on the Zagreb lake Jarun, at which for
a number of years beach volleyball tournaments have been held. They have
become increasingly popular with the public so that this hosting will
certainly delight many enthusiasts of this sport.
The
tournament will gather together 80 of the world’s best male pairs which will
be competing for a prize of 200.000 Euros, while the whole tournament will
be covered by the Eurosport crew as well as many other international
electronic and press media and in this way the tournament will be seen in 80
countries in the world.

Split-Dalmatian County
The first gastro-guide in central Dalmatian
The
Split-Dalmatian County in cooperation with the county Chamber of Trades and
Crafts recently developed the first gastro-guide for the entire central
Dalmatian region. In the gastro-guide, which has been prepared for the last
six months, are presented a total of seventy konoba (wine cellars) and
restaurants from throughout the whole county. The overall conclusion of
experts who collected all necessary information and also assessed the offer
of catering facilities is unanimous: the gastronomic offer is authentic and
with many local traditional meals it represents a true offer of Dalmatian
cuisine.
One
catering facility is presented on each page of the gastro-guide and all
necessary information about each of these can be found here. The guide also
has a list of the best evaluated restaurants. It has been printed in a four
language version and will be distributed through branches and offices of the
Croatian Tourist Board abroad and at all road, air and sea approaches to the
Split-Dalmatian County.

Gorski kotar
An increasingly rich tourist offer
Gorski kotar,
once only a transit region linking the tourist offer of coastal and
continental Croatia, with every year is offering an increasing amount of
tourist activities and as a result attracting an increasing number of
guests. An increasing number of the local inhabitants have been joining in
with the tourist offer, so that tourism in the Goranska region has become
recognisable as an attractive tourist product.
During the
summer many activities tied to the beautiful attractions in nature and
active holidays are offered here, while in the winter months the entire
region transforms into a real “winter wonderland” which is accompanied by
corresponding accommodation infrastructure.
Namely, to
the increasing number of accommodation facilities in Gorski Kotar, recently
in Delnice, one of the city centres of this region, another was added - the
renovated old Hotel “Risnjak” which along with fifty beds also offers an
excellent restaurant and café bar. Also open soon will be a nightclub and
because of the additional offer of sauna, fitness centre and other
accompanying activities it could well receive the status of a smaller
wellness hotel.
The other
great news for all potential guests to the Goranska region is also the
opening of a ski centre Petehovac near the city of Delnice, which along with
a new slope also offers the possibility of attractive night skiing.
Other than
this ski centre, enthusiasts of winter activities can also enjoy themselves
at Čelimbaši, a ski centre located in the region of the municipality of
Mrkopalj, whose ski facilities and ski slopes have also been reconstructed.
The Mrkopalj region also offers other opportunities, like the ski centre at
the highest Croatian settlement, Begovo Razdolje and its accompanying Hotel
Jastreb which operates as part of the Croatian Olympic Centre Bjelolasica.
Other than
this, work on the improvement of the offer of the “Croatian biathlon centre
Zagmanja” near Mrkopalj has also been completed, so that enthusiasts of so
called Nordic disciplines have also come to their own.
As far as the
locality of Čabar and surrounding area in northern Gorski Kotar, along the
very border with Slovenia, there as in earlier years guests can ski on the
slope of the ski centres Rudnik and Tršću.
However a visit to Gorski Kotar is interesting at any time of year because
it offers great opportunities for walks, recreation, enjoyment in nature but
also hospitable hosts.
