Lika-Senj and Karlovac Counties
Master Plan leads to good results

Karlovac and Lika-Senj Counties have developed a tourism Master Plan accepted by the European Commission, which will co-finance it with almost 200 thousand euros, while the two counties are to provide around 25 thousand euros.

The Master Plan is a result of cooperation between the two neighboring counties having natural beauties and being exceptionally interesting in terms of tourism. For example, almost a third of Lika-Senj County’s territory is nature-protected and it has four times more overnights than Karlovac County. However, most of the overnights are generated in the littoral area, especially in Novalja on the Island of Pag, while Plitvice Lakes account for most of the overnights in the continental part.
The project will enable an increase in the number of tourist overnights, number of days of stay per guest, and extend the tourist season both in Lika-Senj County and Karlovac County.

Danish, British and Croatian consultants developed the tourism Master Plan throughout last year, in cooperation with the Institute of Tourism in Zagreb, working closely with representatives of the public and private sectors in both counties.
The purpose of the project is to contribute to the social and economic development of Karlovac and Lika-Senj Counties through targeted development in the tourist sector. The Master Plan is a comprehensive document presenting the current status in the tourist sector, determining the development opportunities in the entire area, as well as 25 priority projects, 10 of which will apply for European funds in the first phase to be able to start their implementation.

PRESENTING

Dubrovnik-Neretva County
Man and nature for a substantial holiday

Although the first thing that comes to mind to many people at the mention of Dubrovnik-Neretva County is the City of Dubrovnik, everyone who has visited at least once knows that the world-renowned city is not the only pearl there.

During its turbulent history, many sovereignties and maritime powers came in contact and conflict in the area, but Dubrovnik still managed to gain full independence thanks to its political skills, so for years it acted as an independent state – the Republic of Dubrovnik. The history of Dubrovnik is also reflected in the abundance of historical monuments and the city’s architecture, which are among the most beautiful in the world according to many surveys.

The distinctiveness of Dubrovnik-Neretva County is therefore also reflected in its unique surroundings and the narrow and non-homogeneous coastal belt, separated from the interior by a mountain massif. The County’s territory comprises two basic wholes: the relatively lateral coastal area with a series of remote islands and those near the coast, the most significant among them being Korčula, Mljet, Lastovo and the Elaphite Islands, and the lower Neretva region with the gravitating coastal area.

The county has a rich natural and cultural heritage, an excellent accommodation infrastructure, and offers numerous tourist programs and attractions.

The Mljet National Park on the Island of Mljet covers the west part of this woody island. In addition to its natural phenomena, Mljet has a rich cultural heritage, including as a highlight the Benedictine monastery complex from the 12th century on an islet in the middle of a lake/bay. The highlights among the protected natural beauties are the Prevlaka Nature Park and numerous special reserves such as the ornithological reserves Pod Gredom, Prud and Orepak situated along the lower part of Neretva River, the ornithological reserves on the islets of Mrkan, Bobara and Supetar near Cavtat, and we should not leave out the Neretva estuary, Mali Ston Bay, and the islet of Lokrum. The area also contains several caves. The county is abundant with park forests, and what is particularly attractive among them is the Trsteno arboretum, known as the oldest renaissance public garden in Dalmatia.

The attractive architectural and cultural heritage of the area is distinctive and highly valuable. The highlights include the walls of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the town cores of Korčula, Cavtat and Ston with its walls and chapels in Ston Field, and the Narona archeological site in the village of Vid near Metković. In addition, there are numerous chapels, summer mansions, monasteries, castles and fortresses incorporated in the contemporary landscape.

The county has a rich accommodation infrastructure with over 90 hotels rated between three and five stars, around 80 camps, and a rich offer of private accommodations renting their facilities via 60 travel agencies. The gastro offer is also very rich, ranging from superbly designed and famous restaurants to taverns, and they all have one thing in common – excellent food and wine.

Koprivnica-Križevci County
A guide to rural tourism and particulars of the Križevci region

The Križevci region and Križevci, a town lying at the foot of Mount Kalnik in northwest Croatia, contain numerous rural estates engaged in promotion of autochthonous foods, beverages, lifestyles and customs of the region. The first tourist guide to rural estates should be printed soon, bringing the features of rural tourism in the region closer to the visitors.

The guide will include several family estates in the Križevci area and four municipalities, locations and basic details of each estate, and a list of all landmarks and events held in Križevci over the year.

The town of Križevci is one of the oldest towns in continental Croatia – the first written documents mention Križevci as the county seat in the 12th century and a free royal town in the 13th century. Archeological finds have confirmed life in the area several thousand years ago.

Križevci is the town of the “Križevci Statute” – unique written rules of conduct under the influence of some wine, and the birthplace of the third Croatian saint – Marko of Križevci. The town is the seat for the Greek Catholic Bishopric, boasting a rich and glorious past, cultural and historical landmarks, hard working craftsmen, entrepreneurs, and top athletes and musicians.

Important events held in Križevci include the Craft and Business Fair that has been held every autumn for 10 years, and Križevačko Veliko Spravišće – a traditional public festival and culture fair held in early June. The town celebrates its day on 24 April with a rich culture & art program, and every spring the local nongovernmental and nonprofit organizations organize the Culture Shock Festival – a month-long festival with numerous events, bringing together eminent writers, painters, musicians and many others from Croatia and its neighboring countries.

Original offer at high seas
Sailing for macrobiotics and vegetarians

With the help of the small family company ETNOtrend from Samobor, guests arriving in Croatia can now enjoy a fully healthy holiday at high seas – sailing adapted to macrobiotics, vegetarians, as well as all others desiring to have healthy and high-quality food on their holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Pelikan, the owners of the company, have conceived three basic sailing programs for the purpose - – Veggie Cruise, Macrocruise, and Bioholiday.

The company owns one sailboat, but it works closely with other companies, so the guests can choose between a dozen sailboats departing from several Adriatic destinations such as Novigrad, Primošten, Šibenik, and two bases on the Island of Krk – Punat and Klimno.

In addition to the sailing service, the Veggie Cruise program includes masterfully prepared vegetarian and vegan specialties made by their cook on a daily basis. The guests are guaranteed three meals a day without having to think about what and when they are going to cook and where they are going to buy the necessary ingredients for their veggie meals. The Macrocruise program provides a similar, yet extended offer – in addition to daily meals made exclusively from biologically grown ingredients, the offer includes certified organic nonalcoholic beverages and wines, natural cosmetics and eco cleaning agents.

Unlike the above two programs, Bioholiday does not include a private cook, but leaves the guests completely free – subject to prior arrangement, the boat is supplied with all necessary foods. Once again, they are solely organic ingredients, so the guests can arrive aboard the sailboats with only their personal belongings, without worrying whether they would miss anything during the sailing trip.

Poreč
The oldest hotel in Poreč undergoes reconstruction

Reconstruction of Poreč’s Hotel Riviera, the oldest hotel in town situated in the historical town core, began in early February. Following the undertaking, the hotel will completely change its appearance to a combination of old and new, and thus certainly attract even more attention.

According to the investor, the hotel, which will be renamed to Hotel Palazzo after the reconstruction, will be designed in two architectural styles – traditional and contemporary. The old part of the hotel, which cannot be modified for its architectural value, will remain unchanged, with two new wings to be added giving it a touch of modern style.

Around five million euros will be invested in the entire reconstruction, and the hotel should have an area of around five thousand square meters, with the new section accounting for a thousand square meters.

Including the annexed part, the hotel will have a total of 70 rooms and four presidential suites – the smallest will have an area of 85 square meters, and the largest as much as 400 square meters.

Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the attractive hotel will have an outdoor swimming pool with seawater available all year long, a beauty salon, an extensive wellness and fitness offer, a night club, a premium restaurant, and the ground floor will contain a dozen top-brand boutiques.

The new hotel building, offering a high four-star service, should get its exterior contours by the beginning of this year’s summer season. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely it will be able to receive its first guests by that time.

Ston’s attraction of European significance

Ston walls are a defensive wall dating back to the 14th century, often referred to as the European Chinese Wall because of its monumentality. It surrounded the town that had waterworks and sewage as early as the 16th century. The walls are a valuable heritage of the Republic of Dubrovnik, and their reconstruction was worth 2.7 million HRK.

The reconstruction of the Ston walls between the former post office and Sokolić Tower is an addition to the demanding renovation of Ston’s fortification system, and the funds were provided by the Friends of Dubrovnik Antiques Society, who earned them on tickets for tours around Dubrovnik walls.

The remaining works have been approved by Dubrovnik’s curators, and will include the quadrangle Gothic tower that is in danger of collapsing. The work will be done in two phases. The first one should be completed by the beginning of the season. After that, this part of the walls should be functional, and the second phase is expected to be completed in a year and a half.

The works on the Ston walls also include an undertaking on the Big Wall and Koruna Tower, so this part of the attractive outdoor monument should be ready for visitors next year.

Certain parts of the former walls were not safe for tours and no tickets were required to visit them, but this will change after the reconstruction.

Ston walls will certainly become a feature of European magnitude, and proceeds from tickets will ensure even more funds for the Friends of Dubrovnik Antiques Society that tends them.

The Friends of Dubrovnik Antiques Society is also responsible for the maintenance, protection, preservation, reconstruction and restitution of fortifications in the Dubrovnik region, and cultural and historical monuments owned by the Society itself.

Šibenik-Knin County
A preserved village from the 18th century

The Knin area is surrounded by exceptionally preserved natural beauties, historical landmarks and archeological sites, and has recently been more and more recognized for its rural locales.

The town of Knin is a royal town having a history dating back to the Neolithic era and Iron Age, and recent research has shown that a settlement from the ancient times existed in the Knin region.

The village of Popovići in the Municipality of Biskupija not far from Knin also gives the Knin region a touch of the ancient time.

The abandoned village contains excellently preserved stone houses up to 300 years old. The beauty and authenticity of the village, as well as the lack of any modern facilities, enable each guest to have an unforgettable holiday and forget they live in the 21st century.

The Municipality of Biskupija has prepared the basic documentation for development of rural tourism in the village financed by the Ministry of Culture, and a project worth 150 thousand HRK was nominated this year. Preservation and other works should begin soon, after which the village of Popovići could become a basis for development of rural tourism in the Municipality of Biskupija.

The residents of Biskupija would be involved in the project, and the Municipality plans to employ people speaking several foreign languages to convey their traditional customs to foreign guests.

Guests coming from abroad would experience a unique form of holiday in Popovići, something they could not experience anywhere else in the world. They would sleep on straw, live with the hosts, help them work in the field, and eat authentic foods that have been prepared in the area since ancient times.

World’s best restaurants
Dubrovnik’s Nautika at the very top

Readers of the renowned US magazine Conde Nast Travel have recently pronounced the popular Dubrovnik’s Restaurant Nautika one of the 12 most romantic restaurants in the world.

The selection of the best and most romantic restaurants in the world was published for Valentine’s Day in the February edition, where all 12 restaurants were listed.

Dubrovnik’s Restaurant Nautika is in a high sixth place, among the most exclusive restaurants in the world.

The commended Restaurant Nautika is situated in Pile, at the very entrance to the Old Town, a globally famous part of Dubrovnik. According to many, this is without a doubt the most attractive and exclusive restaurant in the city.

In addition to an excellent offer of delicacies and an extensive wine list, its best feature is probably the location – beside its position in Pile, in the immediate vicinity of the sea, its terrace provides a unique view of other Dubrovnik’s landmarks such as the Lovrijenac and Bokar forts, framing this perfect picture.
