                                      The  Croatian Islands

A trip to the Adriatic is a breathtaking journey among 1185 of islands, islets and cliffs located in front of 1777 kilometers of the Adriatic coast. How many times have you wanted to run away from everyday life to your own little part of the world, if only you could find it?
The Croatian islands, separated from the mainland, have evolved their own distinctive culture. Their turbulent history has yielded great opportunities for theatrical productions, evenings of music and church festivals. The streets of island towns become animated in the summer. They are filled with the songs of island singers and feasts of fish and wine and laughter.

They  are beautiful because of their rich vegetation. It is as if nature has ignored the open surrounding sea and exposure to the hot Mediterranean sun, so green and wooded are the island archipelagos. It is a micro-climate trapped in time, producing evergreen cypresses and laurel, ancient olive groves, the fileds of lavender of Hvar and the blossoming myrtle. Few will forget the first tangerine or lemon picked from heavy branches, or the vineyards that stretch to the horizon and herald a rich harvest.

  ISLAND SOUVENIRS
One of the distinguishing traits of Croatian national art can be seen in the famous PAG LACE. Meticulous and painstaking work of sunburn women from the island of Pag has been highly praised by European aristocracy.  Some of the oldest Croatian laces, dating from 16th century, can be seen in the Benedictine convent of St. Mary in Zadar.

The island of Hvar also has the tradition of making lace, but from the threads of agave leaves. Nuns from the Benedictine monastery in Hvar are masters of this unique craft.
