Zlatna Penkala
(Golden pen): Awards for the best tourist reports on Croatia
For journalists who are fans of Croatia and its cultural and
natural beauty and tourist offer, some good news: the professional efforts
of 29 journalists will be rewarded with a tour while the two best will also
be rewarded with a Golden pen! When one learns that Croatia is the home of
the fountain pen and mechanical graphite pencil – “devices” which are
symbols of the journalist profession, the award takes on an even greater
significance.
Namely, the
Croatian tourist board has established for foreign media representatives the
annual award “Zlatna Penkala” for published material on Croatia. The award
for foreign tourist journalists will be presented in two categories: for
best printed material and best TV or radio report.
Written,
video and audio documentation must be delivered to the Head office of the
Croatian tourist board in Zagreb by 15 January 2005.
On the basis
of a decision by a special jury the two winners of the award “Zlatna
penkala” (Golden pens) will receive the award – specially designed “Golden
pens”, while all others nominated will receive as a sign of gratitude - a
special plaque.
That all 29
will actually be winners is attested by the fact that all those nominated
will be invited to the presentation and tour of Croatia lasting 4 to 5 days,
followed by the award ceremony of the “Zlatna penkala”. It is also planned
that the official press conference will be attended by the President of the
Republic of Croatia, the Prime Minister Croatia, Minister for the sea,
tourism, transport and development and the State Secretary for tourism,
while the presentation for Croatian tourism will be lead by the director of
the Head Office of Croatian tourist board. The award “Zlatna penkala” will
be awarded to the winners in two categories at a special ceremony by the
President of the Republic of Croatia or Prime Minister of the Republic of
Croatia.
For
every true devotee to the journalist profession this acknowledgement will
have an added symbolic value because of the fact the Croatia, along with the
cravat, is also the home of the fountain pen and the mechanical graphite
pencil. Namely, inventor engineer Slavoljub Penkala who worked and lived in
Zagreb, in 1906 invented the first mechanical graphite pencil in the world
and in 1907 he invented the first fountain pen in the world.
Because of
great interest in the market, the up to then production was moved from the
workshop in 1911 into a new factory which Slavoljub Penkala constructed in
Branimir street in Zagreb with Edmund Moster, with whom he had cooperated
with in 1906. Penkala’s pencils and fountain pens at this time were exported
to over 70 countries in the world and in the time period between 1912 and
1926 it was one of the biggest factories of writing equipment in the world.
And so at the beginning of the 20th century these revolutionary
inventions and symbols of the journalist profession ventured into the world
from Zagreb, Croatia and took it by storm.

Offer: Family and small hotels
leading the field with their autochthonous offers
In Croatia
today there are about one hundred family and small hotels operating of which
the greatest number, about eighty of them, are gathered together in the
National association of family and small hotels with headquarters in Split.
Even though it was officially founded only in April of 2004, the Association
has up to now achieved important results regarding articulation of common
interests, lobbying of government institutions and improvement of loan
conditions for members.
“Our aim is
for there to be a thousand family and small hotels in Croatia by the end of
this decade – states the president of the Association Šime Klarić and
continues: “The Association is in the process of development and by
partnering with the State in this segment of tourist offer it will be of aid
to future entrepreneurs so that they do not make the same mistakes as their
predecessors. “
“I
congratulate you on the work done so far and the best tourist season to date
– said Božidar Kalmeta, Minster of the Ministry of the sea, tourism,
transport and development at the press conference of the Association, and
went on to say “Small hotels are definitely the most perspective and most
sought after tourist capacity whose quality is based on the all over
authentic and gastro-offer.”
“In large
hotels we wish to recognise world standards, while in small and family
hotels we want to secure a recognisable identity based on autochthonous
offer – points out the director of the Croatian tourist board Niko Bulić
MSc.
Let us
mention that the Croatian tourist board is the publisher of a brochure on
family and small hotels, printed in 60.000 copies in six languages.

66th World Skål
International congress
Zagreb and Dubrovnik – hosts in 2005
The Croatian cities Zagreb and Dubrovnik have officially been
pronounced the next hosts of the 66th World Skål International
congress which will be held from the 16th to the 21st
of October 2005.
This was
confirmed during the recently held 65th Skål International
congress which was held in Durban and at which the director of the Croatian
congress and incentive office Nikola Račić was elected as the new director
of Skål International and member of the Executive committee of Skål for a
mandate of three years.
The election
of Nikola Račić as the director of Skål International, who has been an
active member of the Skål International council since 1985, is at the same
time a great acknowledgement of his many years work on the development and
promotion of Croatian tourism.
Skål
International is the largest international tourist organisation which
encompasses professionals from all branches of the tourist industry. In this
way, Skål today numbers about 22.000 members gathered together in 48 clubs
from over 88 countries in the world and their basic motto is - “Doing
business among friends”.
The first
Skål club was founded in Paris in 1934 and since then has spread throughout
the whole world. In Croatia today there are two clubs operating – in Zagreb
the Skål club was founded in 1972 and in Dubrovnik in 1994.
The first
World Skål congress was held in Paris in 1934 and since then has been held
every year in different cities around the world. Up until now it has been
held in many big cities like Geneva, New York, Toronto, Tel Aviv, Helsinki,
Buenos Aires, Singapore, Manila, Las Vegas, Adelaide, Cape Town, Rio de
Janeiro, Paris, Vienna…. The fact that Zagreb and Dubrovnik, in close
competition with London, have been given the opportunity to prove themselves
as hosts is a great acknowledgement for Croatian tourism and members of the
Skål club.

Island of
Ugljan
The first marina on the island is being built
The
Government of the Republic of Croatia recently signed a concession agreement
on marine demesne on the Island of Ugljan, that is the location Sutomišćica
which is located near the fishing villages Kali and Preko, with a Zadar
company. The purpose of the concession is construction of the first marina
on the island which, according to plans, will have 203 berths and will be
located in a natural cove in the very centre of the town and will extend
over 55 thousand square metres seaward and about 150 square metres on land.
The marina will be a combination of new and old. It will be constructed
from stone, wood and glass and as announced by the owners of the company –
its class will be class “A”, which means it will offer high quality service.
The completion of all planned works and final opening of the marina is
expected by the end of 2006, however the first phase of work should be
completed by the end of September 2005, which means that in this period it
can be expected that the marina Sutomiščica will greet its first nautical
guests.

Top tourist destinations in
2005
Croatia the most popular European destination
The leading
British tourist agency, Thomson Holidays, expects that Croatia in the
upcoming season will become one of the most sought after tourist destination
in the world, while in Europe most probably also the most sought after
holiday destination.
This is based
on their latest ranking of the most popular hit destinations, where Brazil
is ranked number one, followed by Egypt and Morocco then Croatia which is
ranked in a high fourth place. In this ranking British experts attempt to
foresee events which will mark 2005 and 2006 and as can be seen they predict
that Brazil will be the greatest hit, because as they point out it is a “new
market full of potential.”
Following this South American country is Egypt
for which already exists great tourist interest which is also the case with
Morocco. Croatia is the only European country positioned among the first
five hit destinations and other than Croatia there is great interest
regarding the Italian island of Sardinia.
As far as tourist cities are concerned, the year 2005 could also bring
substantial profits to the Slovak city of Bratislava and the established
French “tourist metropolis” – Paris.
Thomson Holidays
Hotel Neptun the best “small & friendly” hotel in Croatia
The Poreč hotel Neptun which is part of the company Riviera
Holding has received, for the third time in a row, the gold medal from the
British tour operator Thomson Holiday for the best hotel in Croatia in the
category “small & friendly”.
The Hotel
Neptun which is located in the Istrian tourist centre – the City of Poreč,
received the award on the basis of a Thomson questionnaire filled out by
British guests who gave this hotel in Croatia the highest ranking for food
quality, courtesy and welcome, quality of service, cleanliness and overall
impression of the hotel.
The award was presented at the World Travel Market fair in London where
among a competition of more than 100 world hotels, 40 were selected and
presented.

TUI
Holly and TUI Umwelt Champion
Double award for the Plava laguna
The hotels of
the company Plava laguna from Poreč recently received the prestigious award
“TUI Holly 2004” – from the world’s largest tour organiser TUI Germany.
The TUI Holly
award is only presented to the best hotels which have been evaluated on the
basis of surveys of guests who travelled with this leading world tour
operator.
In its
programs TUI Germany encompasses more than 10.000 hotels and their services
are used by about 6, 7 million travellers annually, therefore given the size
of the evaluating group but also competing hotels, this award presented to
the Plava laguna is exceptionally worthy.
However,
along with this award, Plava laguna also boasts another TUI award, the
ecological award “TUI Umwelt Champion 2004” which was awarded on the basis
of high evaluation of guests in regards to protection and landscaping of the
environment and at the end of August to their tourist settlement Laguna
Galijot and Hotel Laguna Materada.
This means
that Laguna Galijot and Hotel Laguna Materada have received two awards from
TUI Germany and given that these awards are presented to only the best
hotels in the world it lays witness to the exceptional value and quality of
their offer and subsequently the overall offer of the company Plava laguna.

Vodice
The square in white stone with an amphitheatre
The
waterfront Vladimira Nazora in Vodice, more precisely the town square around
the existing large monuments, will await the coming summer season in new
attire.
Namely, after
the overall reconstruction of the infrastructure in this area last year –
electricity, water, sewage and phone lines, recently the second phase of the
reconstruction of this square commenced.
Namely, the
entire square will be paved in white stone, it will be horticulturally
landscaped and a number of stone benches or “siđa” shall be erected –
a small cement wall on which in the past, but also more often today, local
inhabitants and guests gather to talk about news, to observe passers-by and
the like.
In the area
of the former “guvna” – a cement circle in which wheat was often threshed, a
small, low amphitheatre will be constructed with a stage on which cultural
manifestations, which are very popular in Vodice, will be held in the
future.
The
entire project is worth some 600 thousand Euros and the completion date for
reconstruction of the square has been announced for the end of March 2005.

Split
A new casino opened on the Riva
The City of
Split has another representative casino and this on the most attractive
position of the city waterfront.
Even though the City of Split already has a number of casinos, the owners of
the new “Gold club Riva” do not doubt that this casino will offer even more
entertainment to Split inhabitants and tourists. Namely, the “Gold club
Riva” extends over about 200 square metres and along with entertainment it
also offers a large café bar – only for patrons of the casino. As far as
gaming machines are concerned, guests have at their disposal three American
roulettes, more than twenty IGT machines very similar to the popular slot
machines, about twenty Novomatic machines and the same number of American
Williams machines for which only this casino has the required certification
in the south-east of Europe.
Even though
the content of the casino is from an American chain the interior decoration
of the Casino attempts to portray a Dalmatian ambient so that guests may
enjoy the authentic atmosphere of the city in which they’re visiting while
having fun.

Osijek
The most luxurious hotel in Eastern Slavonia opened
The City of
Osijek finally has a luxurious four star hotel in which from now on both
“usual” and business guests will find their niche and with its opening the
rich congress season has already begun.
It is
actually the old Hotel Osijek which has been completely renovated and about
8,5 million Euros has been invested into its reconstruction.
The hotel has
14 floors and today offers a total of 140 luxuriously equipped rooms of
which all have a mini bar, pay TV, internet connection, their own safe, hair
dryer and all other elements necessary for the high category of the hotel.
Some of the rooms are also adapted for handicapped guests and exceptionally
tall people who often have problems with standard size furniture. Along with
the rooms, also on offer are seven luxury apartments and a large
presidential suite.
The congress
section of the hotel has at its disposal a large congress hall which can
seat more than 250 people. Along with all this, on the top floor of the
hotel guests also have at their disposal a large wellness, fitness and
beauty centre.
The entire
hotel is encased in glass so that each floor offers a view of the City of
Osijek – the largest Eastern Slavonian city with recognisable architecture
and the specific Slavonian way of life. Into this tradition definitely falls
the distinct Slavonian cuisine, therefore the hotel also has a large

Dubrovnik
Golf courses for Dubrovnik guests
The area at
the foot of the mountain Srđ which is located north of the old Dubrovnik
city, may soon become an attractive golf locality. Namely, there are already
big plans for the construction of golf courses in this area which has up
until now been consisted of agricultural land and rocky ground and was used
for tourist purposes.
The
construction of the golf courses is planned in two phases. The first phase
of work would encompass construction of two golf courses with 18 holes each
and all necessary accompanying facilities, while the second phase would see
the construction of another golf course.
Potential
investors have announced that the courses will be fully integrated into the
environment of Srđ so that the area will not be devastated, on the contrary
it will play an important role in Dubrovnik tourism.
Other than
the golf courses, the same investors are also considering construction of a
hotel with a wellness and congress offer.

Red Dot Design Award
2004
Croatian posters among the most original in the world
Under the
slogan “Mediterranean as it once was” and “Croatia – a world of difference”,
the posters of the Croatian tourist board whose concept and design we
authored by Boris Ljubičić and photos by Ivo Pervan were presented by one of
the most prestigious international design awards – Red dot Design Award for
2004.
Red Dot is
among the oldest international design competitions, with the first award
presented in 1955. The organiser of the competition is the Design centre of
the region Nordrhein Westfalen (Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen) and they
gathered together a jury of acknowledged experts in design with a total of
nine members from seven countries. The award is presented for the basic
categories “Red Dot – product design” and “Red Dot – design in
communications”, followed by the subcategories: advertising, corporate
communication, communication in finance, product communication, public,
press, television and electronic media, culture and sport, publishing and
multimedia. Young talents are presented with the award Red Dot junior, while
affirmed designers with the Red Dot Grand Prix award.
This year Red
Dot received about 4.500 works and at the recent presenting of the awards
“red dot quality for outstanding design” 198 works were awarded, while 31 of
them were awarded with “red dot best of the best” for the best from all ten
categories.
The
organisers portrayed the posters of the Croatian tourist board as an
original concept of 3D format, which with two pictures present the Croatian
tourist destination in a multilayered manner. Sea and land, culture and
nature, north and south, as integrated pictures have a specific visual
quality and natural perception. By moving in front of the posters the
observer discovers the picture in the same manner as a tourist moving across
the landscape or sight seeing through a city, cultural site or the like. The
diversity and contrast of the Croatian tourist content with this concept of
two pictures which conceal and reveal individually each motif is a
completely new perception in the poster category, as is the presentation in
a new form

Swedish
magazine “Res”
Croatia – the destination of the year
In the
opinion of the readers of the Swedish magazine “Res”, Croatia was the most
attractive tourist destination in 2004.
The magazine
“Res” collected the votes of its readers on their internet site for one
month, choosing tourist winners in about twenty categories.
Croatia won
first place in the category Destination of the year over Cape town and
Shanghai. Thailand was announced first in the category far away
destinations, Hilton – the best hotel chain, Resfeber – the best internet –
booking site, Fritidsresor – the best charter tour operator, AVIS – the best
rent-a-car agency. Kastrup took the title for best airport, Ryan Air – best
“low fare” airline, SAS – was announced the best regular airline company and
THAI AIRWAYS – the best intercontinental airline. The surveyed Swedes also
dished out some criticism among which the Canary Islands were pronounced the
most over-priced destination.
The aim of
this big RES survey in which over 10 thousand readers took part was for the
readers themselves to choose the best tourist offer. The RES award is the
first and largest in the tourist industry.
Let us also
point out that in all this year’s surveys in Scandinavia which evaluated the
quality of the tourist destination , Croatia’s tourist offer was highly
ranked which proves that in the millions strong Scandinavian market, Croatia
was positioned as a “trend” destination and there are nearly no tourists who
are not interested in visiting it.
